7:1 pixel-to-megabytes, is about the same data rate as Redcode 36 on Mx One.

Have you guys noticed which is cleaner and more free of artifacts?

What? No one has compared MX at Redcode 36 to any Epic compression rates?

Not sure, but Redcode 36 is very clean, it would seem cleaner than 7:1 - but I'd love to hear other opinions.

Dave, if that's true, then Epic is compressing very differently from the way Red One does. 10:1 looks nowhere near as clean or as sharp as Redcode 36. I've never seen 36 really break down in some crappy way, even when filming fields of beach grass at f8. 10:1 yes. 10:1 often.

I would like to hear from Red on this one. Wouldn't it be nice to have both cameras speak the same language and have identical terminology for similar compressions? Me thinks so.

I would love as much information as possible on this topic from the wise minds at Red.

According to an Epic pocket guide I got here (http://www.theblackandblue.com/guide/red-epic/), RC36 is the equivalent to 9:1 on Epic.

It says that at 4K (so we have a comparison to Red One), you can get 63 minutes at 9:1 on a 128GB card. So doing the math, 128GB / 63minutes = 2.03 GB/min / 60sec = 33.8 MB/sec. So, that's a little below RC36 (36 MB/sec).

However, I have had similar results to you. We've shot some tough scenes (sunny day with a lot of trees and shadows), and the compression was rough even at 6:1.

Rob,
can you really tell the diff. (EPIC) 10:1 vs. 7:1 ? I'd be hard pressed to notice any difference. Did a bunch of testing for a 3d imax theater release and we tested the gammet and settled on 7:1, but in testing 10:1 i saw no visible difference. What are you calling a "difference" --- digging into color channels or what? what IS the difference and what you you judging it on?

Aggressive grading and greenscreen brings out any issues. If you don't grade with qualifiers too much, it's less of an issue.
