Finally, had a moment to figure out how to use a Red Mote on a fluid head handle.

I was accustom to using a remote start/stop, zoom, and focus from a tripod/head handle from years of filming. This all went away in the last year. From spare parts and Really Right Stuff quick release plates /clamps, I am now able to use my thumb again!

I thought I would share this idea! Maybe someone will make a real one!

Back to the wilds ....... now I can use my brain and a thumb!

Best,

Kennan & Karen Ward

I wanted a pan handle camera controller as well for filming fast-moving birds in the rainforest. My goal was that it would be streamlined, secure and adjustable for different shooting angles.
After a couple of tries I ended up with this REDMote mount setup using parts from a $40 tripod I shamelessly cannabilized. Lightweight, weatherproof, quick release and looks pretty clean I think.
Cheers, Jeff

Jeff, how do you like your RRS sticks?

You know, I looked at buying them for a long time, but hesitated because for the price I couldnʻt commit without seeing one in person. I did get to test the nearest option, the Gitzo Systematic, but wasnʻt that impressed with their split apex design and cast metal/painted finish construction. I like to throw my rig over my shoulder and move without worry, and Gitzo had to overcome the weakness of their apex design with that Naturescapes add-on plate which doesnʻt allow for a leveling base. The RRS system also folds down smaller at the apex with their offset leg ends, which I liked for strapping it tighter on my pack. I got the TVC-33S, which holds everything from the Scarlet to a 60 lb jib setup no problem. They only weigh 4 lbs, measure 24 inches collapsed. Paired with a Miller Compass 15 head, the combo is smooth as butter and rock solid with my ~20 lb rig.
