Would love for RED to make a mobile phone! Hate Apple's built in obsolescence... I wonder how they would approach it?

Speaking of which, where is the line for RED in terms of what they would consider building/releasing? Is there a line? Should there be?

I'm interested in your thoughts!

I'm happy with Red focusing on motion picture cameras. I don't really see what they'd have to add to a phone, if my phone can go on the internet and take photos I'm happy. I think Red's resources are better spent on cinema cameras.

I think for now they are busy enough revolutionising the film industry; part I was changing the acquisition part, next up is the distribution. I somehow hope and pray that entering a very competitive, new market is way down their list.

(We've already lost Apple to the consumer marked, no need for RED to follow suit.)

please no, let others build that, totally useless for red to build.

i would love for the red to include the connectivity and streaming functionality of the gopro 3 (a $500 dollar camera!). It streams audio and video to my iPhone and i can flawless control all the settings with my iphone. that is just awesome :)
Why cant a $20,000 Epic do that?? the redmote is a hell to connect and works badly most of the time, why can gopro nail it for so cheap, and red has such a hard time making something like that. Please call gopro and ask if you can license there technique somehow and put it in a upgraded board for the dragon update...THAT would be awesome ;)

How would you propose a phone that didn't become obsolete? Fact is, you could own a phone for 5 years ad it still works fine. The "obsolescence" part is user choice.

The best Gopro 3 Black Edition costs 400$. That is freaking unreal price for such a groundbreaking camera. Year from now we will shoot 4K 30fps with the next Gopro model. That will be dream come true. Truly a cutting edge technology in a package that is a size of a coin.

Nice points all round.

However, personally I don't see why RED shouldn't be thinking really big for the future... Although maybe its not as black and white (or should I say monochrome?! :yesnod: ) as it seems...

What are your thoughts on RED taking what they know about sensors and supplying camera parts to a mobile phone/mobile device manufacturer? A mobile with a mini-RED designed camera is certainly something I would be interested in!

For that matter, what about compact cameras?

Reasons for holding back on something like this?

Don't kid yourself that RED have the secret to making things safe from becoming obsolete.... The Epic and all it's parts will become obsolete.... Just the nature of technology.

Yes, you can argue that you can change the brain and modules.... In that case, a broom is obsolete... You can change the head and the stick as many times as you want.

Obsolescence obsolete. Clever marketing tool.... and yea, leave the phones to apple, samsung etc

What? Seriously...

That will happen the same day Apple announces they are getting in the high-end Cinema camera market. Company success is about "Focus" I can not think of any better way to have RED distracted away from making insanely great cameras than following a path such as that......perhaps only second to RED announcing a new line of Hybrid Cars :yesnod: Although I hear the cars will have noisy fans to keep the battery cells cool

DRAGON UPGRADE TO IPHONE CAMERA........JUST KIDDING!!! LOL

And here is the prototype.

You are welcome.

; )
