  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED MINI MAG , MINI MAG SIDE MODULE and MINI MAG STATION now shipping.

man these are tiny!

This may have been asked already, but will there be a carbon fiber mini mag side SSD module for the Carbon Fiber Dragon cameras?

Sorry what is the question?

im trying to get the idea on here.Minimag is only one step ahead of Redmag on compression type. This is the minimum compression you can go with Minimag? i was thinking about 6K 24Fps 2:1 3:1 / 5K 24Fps 1:1 something close to this.Any chance to tweak those in future and make it goes to eleven :)
for now Minimag

Can you answer this one Jarred? Thanks

Okay, this should be obvious, but I just want to make sure: For a new RED buyer, does it make any sense at this point to go with the 1.8" side module, full-size REDmags, etc. or is it a better investment due to the half price for the same amount of storage, to just go with the mini mags?

3:1 may come in the future on the mini-mags... but there isn't much of a visual difference between 4:1 and 3:1 compression.. you can test yourself by switching to 11fps and comparing frames between 4:1, 3:1, and we now ever let you goto 2:1.

Maybe think about if you need in the future to hire a second camera for second angle. I have a Scarlet but a R1MX incase I need a second angle. That is only with a 1.8" SSD so that solves my question right there. I imagine that a lot of rental houses may be stuck with 1.8" SSD's for a while.

Hi Jared,
The new CF offer to allow a swap out to the Mini side, Mg++, SSD module is great. The media cost, which can change, of course is an additional outlay, though. So how imminent is the Mini Mg++, please?

Thank you very much

Should be sometime in January
.

I have already answered that question.. yes, there will be a Carbon side SSD module for the Carbon Fiber Dragons.

Thanks Jarred! Sorry about not reading the whole thread - super busy end of the year (if you were watching the Glory 13 Tokyo Live fight - I was flying the steadicam on the event). I only saw the previous poster asking the question - which made me believe it was not answered yet. Again - my bad...

Merry Christmas!

Peter

Good the see market factors lowing costs on these SSDs.

A year ago you could buy a 256GB 1.8" SSD for around $2500. Now you get double the storage, 512GB, reduced physical size and a slight increase in R/W performance.

Well done.

And for the same reason, we do not get monthly commodity pricing on memory. We need to make large orders to be able to get the qty needed to even be able to talk to memory manufactures about getting us special runs for extra the testing and firmware we require. So the price it costs us for the 256gb large cards today is the same as we paid last year on memory because thats when we purchased and inventoried them... and remember, these cards are only a few years old, not far from the 18 month normal cycle. If we do get a break in pricing because we sell out of inventory and have the opportunity to renegotiate pricing for a replacement order, then you guys see that break as you have seen in the past.

This doesn't really make sense to me, but I suppose every company has their pricing strategies. Most manufacturers seem to eventually lower their prices or offer coupons or at least the vendors that carry their products lower their prices even within the first year they are available, especially for computers and cameras which depreciate quite quickly. They do this even though they may still be selling old inventory that cost just as much for them to make as it did when the product came out. It makes sense to price products at least partly on market value not based only on what a company spent on components and R&D with no consideration for time. Seems RED should be accounting for depreciation of their inventory and lower price with demand accordingly, though I guess maybe if demand really persists without drop in price RED is justified in keeping prices up. It's really hard to imagine anyone these days would even consider spending $2450 on a 256GB REDMAG when you can get a faster, lighter, newer, double the capacity 512GB miniMAG for the same price...

I understand that maybe sourcing components may be different for REDMAGs than for other parts and that RED does have a monopoly on their storage media so it doesn't directly compete with other storage media, it's more that their ecosystem is competing with others, which probably has a greater effect on purchases of cameras before it affects purchases of media. I guess the clear message is that RED wants people to buy miniMAGs and not buy old REDMAGs. I guess at least even if RED's store isn't affected by fair market value, at least the used market should be and prices for old used REDMAGs may be dropping quite a bit soon as people transition to miniMAGs.

I saw someone else ask this question but I did not see the answer in this thread.

My understanding was the 512GB 1.8 SSD's where also faster then the smaller GB 1.8 SSD's.

Can I get confirmation on the difference in speed between the 512GB 1.8 and the 512GB Mini in terms of speed and the difference between possible compression and data drops.

THANKS!
