  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED MINI MAG , MINI MAG SIDE MODULE and MINI MAG STATION now shipping.

Will there be a rear Mini Mag SSD module in the future? I would love to have the option to use both types of memory without having to swap out the Side-SSD reader.

You may not be able to say now, but it's definitely a wish list item.

AND if you made a dual slot continuous recording rear Mini Mag SSD module, that would be awesome!

+1 on this - don't really want to get rid of my existing media and side SSD module. I'd rather have the option of both for redundancy, and ease of getting additional media.

Sold my old ones really quick, ordered these new bad boys. I hope they ship tomorrow like promised :-) All the same Jared and Red team thanks for these new great mags!

Interesting. Two points:

1. Any reason not to put the guts of the new 512GB mag into a standard Redmag shell? So we can get the benefit of much better memory pricing without having to buy a new side module or change anything else about our setups? $2450 vs. $3900 is a hell of a difference.

2. There HAS to be an adapter to use the new mags in the old side modules and docking stations, right??

Good that there's new product and better pricing, but I'm struggling mightily to understand the change in form factor. Of any and all gripes people might have had with Redmags, 'physical size' was NOT one of them!

I'm sorry but it does look a bit like change for changes sake, absent a cogent explanation. It breaks compatibility and you do NOT do that without a very good reason.

Heh. I'm out to dinner and something I just batted around in my head while thinking about those compression ratios...

Still guys are going to love 6K 2:1 RED CODE RAW.

And I think that would be essentially lossless...I remember Jim or Jarred stating that REDCODE 2.5:1 would be lossless compression if it were possible.

No adapter.. I have explained that one before. It was the definition of Janky. Just because it looks like the mini mag would fit right inside the old mag as an adapter, The bus and connectors are different and the double connection exposed some data integrity issues after heavy abuse. So to make an adapter that we could hard wire to avoid all that, you would either need that adapter 10 inches long ( which we tried , and it sucked ) or make them twice the width of existing mags which means you would hafta replace everything anyways.

As well, the size is important in the future. We didn't do this just for kicks..

But no worries... We are used to the objections so feel free to let it out... Same thing happened when we moved away from the big RED DRIVES ( remember those ) to the CF and then from the CF to the SSD. It is a double edge sword... new technology makes things better but there are going to be some people that get stuck with the past that won't be happy.

Fair enough Jarred, thanks for the response :-)

I remember when you folks were talking about a DSMC module to allow use of Red Drives with Epic/Scarlet… and a CF card adapter to allow CF cards to be used in Redmag slots on Scarlet? Or am I imagining that? Not griping - 'everything is subject to change' - and you took care of people with Red Drive trade-in, we haven't forgotten that :-)

I tend to agree, adapters are by definition kludgey things. But it's one of those things I would absolutely want in my toolbox, on the basis that sooner or later I'll get caught out, unless and until everyone changes over. Not something you would want to use every day, but definitely something it's better to have and not need, than need and not have… hopefully a 3rd party will step up there.

If you have future plans where size matters, well that tells me something… ok you guys haven't led me wrong yet, I'll trust you and go with that :-)

But, please, a statement of direction? Is the standard mag still on the roadmap alongside the mini? For the time being, will you continue to develop, produce & support product for both? When you get the 1TB sorted, will that be available in both standard and mini shells, for example?

It's just that… every other storage medium got canned, and we were told Redmag SSD was the One Direction for the future, the way, the truth, the light… and now it's changed.

Thanks

Mike

How does the old 512 cards compare to the new mini cards? Any chart available for that?

Plus one here as well, a mini SSD rear module would be great. Switching over an existing Epic and media is about 10K, and theoretically wouldn't earn any more rental income. Glad to hear the mini SSD's are only "optional".

Unfortunately we don't dictate form factors that memory companies make... In reality the Laptop companies do. And the industry has widely moved on from the 1.8" factor used in the current mags. We of course will continue to sell and support the current larger mags.. they still work great. But don't expect larger sizes and faster speeds to come out down the road. That's technology for you. It moves fast. At least we are modular so you only need to replace the side module instead of the whole camera when technology moves and we move with it.

DING. Possibly the most telling point in the whole discussion!

I'll butt out now; a time when you're asking Red for favors is a bad time to be giving the boss a hard time ;-)

No worries Mike. And damn... sorry to hear the news about your Dragon upgrade order getting lost in the shuffle. I think there is a spot in the upgrade line in January 2017 we can fit you back in :)

heh heh heh. I kid, I kid.

Why?

At least if we have to endure a whole new media format, why not follow the industry trend and give us two slots?

One way people run alexas is doing double data mags, sending one to post for offloading and then reusing the 2nd one once backup is confirmed. Saves a lot of headache with DMT.

Really appreciate the transparency here Jarred. Changing form factors like this on most other platforms would be a HUGE deal, but not at all here thanks to the modularity of this system. Stuff like this makes me glad I chose RED.
