  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED mini-mag error on my 4th shoot. Really?

I almost never secure format, but it is something I do when I get a new mag and occasionally a new firmware.

I've seen a few folks have that whatever long error message having issues often with a dirty media bay and I've also seen dirty mags cause some frustration. Don't know what you're exactly experiencing but contact your Bomb Squad Rep to get some assistance.

Phil, what exactly is a secure format... and how is it different from a normally done format?

In the Menu=Media=pulldown menu at the bottom of that page are 2 choices. Format and Utilities if you open Utilities you will see the Secure Format choice. It will format the mag just as the regular Format choice but it takes about 30 seconds. My guess is that it is doing a deeper formatting of the mag than just the normal Format. Maybe writing 1's or 0's over the previous media and then formatting it or something like that. Im not a formatting guru.

Secure format is a form of "manual wear-levelling" by writing zeros to the ssd you insure better guaranteed performance and ideally less low level failure or "corruption" of a drive's bits.

Call me superstitious, but I began doing this with my first DSMC1 bodies and mags, and have continued to this day. Never once had a failed mag or botched offload when following this series of standards and practices.

And in many ways, that's what this is partly about - developing a series of practices that you do methodically every time, to guarantee success supporting the variety of other circumstances we encounter and are thrown into.

With good standards and practices in place an AC will never accidentally format a hot mag (stupidest human error that I hear about on a weekly basis - ZERO excuse for this happening).

Hi, I'm new in this form, but before I take any further steps, maybe someone here would help me. I've purchase a Red Mini Mag 240GB on ebay. When I put it in my Red Epic dragon, it says that is not supported. I've updated to the latest firmware. I even downgraded to the earliest possible firmware. I've done secure formatting. When i put it i it says, "This media is not supported with your current version of DSMC firmware..." If i Read the info on the Mag is says 240GB v1. I have a 512GB V4 Mag that works fine. Is there a way to update the memory card. I've also reformated the card in the computer and it still does not work. Any advise will be helpful.

Is it a fake card? Is sending it in my only option.

Prob should contact support through website. I would suspect they are the only ones who could flash a new firmware on the card if it needs one.

BTW my issue was resolved. It ended up being a faulty card which was replaced.

Using build 6.3.78 on a Weapon Helium S35 the other day and noticed that my Mini Mags would not format. They came up with an error message of Mag not formatted and the mag never showed up on the monitor as if it were inserted. After going through 3 mags including the Red ones it came up each time with the same message even after going through the formatting steps. Regular formatting and the Utility, Secure Format.... After trying sever things, Rebooting and a few others. I went through the menus and changed the only thing I could think of that I had changed from the day before when we were shooting. Open Gate. I switched it off and then the mags formatted normally with no troubles at all.
I have no idea what Open Gate has to do with the formatting of the mags but thats what cleared up our problem.
I have sent in a log file and a note to RED to see if they can figure out how to duplicate it.
But I mention it here for what is worth for all who may be having similar problems.
