I'll be giving a presentation "Shooting Movies with a RED One Camera Through a Microscope," at the Adobe MAX conference in Los Angeles on Monday, October 25th. Here's the blurb:

"Join Richard Weinberg of the USC School of Cinematic Arts to explore high-resolution motion picture optical microscopy. Weinberg developed a system for shooting movies with a RED One camera through a microscope and created a ten-minute movie, "MicrOrganisms," in 4K resolution that premiered in December 2009 at the CineGrid conference. This session reviews the image capture, editing, and visual effects process and how Weinberg used this system to stream live HD microscopy from Los Angeles to Yokohama, Japan, for an interactive presentation at SIGGRAPH Asia."

"MicrOrganisms" features the frenetic activities of microscopic creatures found in a drop of pond water, too small to be seen with the naked eye, but captured live in 4k with a RED One camera through optical microscopes, in configurations that I developed. Along with an original music track.

I think that it's a credit to the RED team to have created such an outstanding and versatile camera, and a demonstration of its use in an important and fascinating field.

Registration is required to attend.

Wish I could see it Richard! Alas, I'm stuck in Tokyo.... :D

Look forward to catching up over your side of the pond though one day!

Cheers from Japan,

Paul :)

How did you isolate the vibration from the camera's fan from getting down into the stage?

Thanks, Paul! Tokyo's a fascinating place in which to be stuck. I learned a lot meeting with you there. Hope to see you here one day.

Cheers from LA,
Richard

Great to hear about the continued exposure of this very interesting application Richard. Seeing your images delivered through our 4K projector was quite impressive to say the least.

How did you isolate the vibration from the camera's fan from getting down into the stage?

It doesn't seem to be a problem. I have the camera mounted rigidly on top of the microscope, and you can run the camera in the fan's 'silent' mode to minimize its effect.

Richard, I'd love to see this. Will there be other venues showing what you have done or places online to view it in the near future?

Jeff, thanks for your interest. I'll be giving a presentation on this at the Armand Hammer Museum in Los Angeles on Saturday, November 6 as part of the "Enormous Microscope Evening." Nothing on line yet.

Hi Richard. I'm in NC and would really love to see this presentation. I have an upcoming project that is in need of shooting through a microscope and I'm not really sure where to begin. I'm considering the feasibility of flying out there for this now. Will you be giving the same presentation at the Museum as the Adobe conference?

Hi Josh,

This Monday, Oct. 25th, it will be a one hour presentation, including a screening of "MicrOrganisms." At the Armand Hammer Museum, it will be a demonstration setup, less of a formal presentation, but also showing "MicrOrganisms." At the Museum, there will be other non-Red microscopy demos taking place simultaneously.

Maybe I can shoot some Red microscopy footage for your project?

RED Microscope demo: Saturday Nov. 6

I'll be showing my RED One Camera / microscope system and short subject "MicrOrganisms," this Saturday at the:

ENORMOUS MICROSCOPIC EVENING!
November 6th 2010
4-7 PM
Hammer Museum
10899 Wilshire Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90024
Museum Phone: 310.443.7000
Admission: Free!

There will be a dozen other (non-RED) exhibits related to the ever expanding field of microscopy on display.

RED One #447

Last night at the Armand Hammer Museum in LA I presented my work on RED microscopy as part of the "Enormous Microscopy Evening." I showed my RED One / Olympus BX50 microscope system, and presented the movie "MicrOrganisms" that I shot in 4k last year with the system. In the attached picture you can see the movie playing on the monitor at the left, and a live feed from the RED One / microscope on the HP DreamColor monitor in the middle. Two frames from the movie are attached; one with a hydra (the green creature with tentacles) and several diatoms (the elongated, almost rectangular organisms). The other picture shows the cast of microscopic characters in the movie. There was a great turnout at the museum, and people loved seeing the amazing detail that the RED captures of live microorganisms in action.
