  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red Mag Not mounting

Nick, was it a dead mag? What did you end up doing?

Everything I tried (and it was quite a bit: tried USB, Firewire, and eSATA connections; zapped the PRAM then tried all 3 connections again; tried running R3D Data Manager's Red Undead utility for finding formatted/missing R3D files; tried everything I know to try in Terminal and Disk Utility) pointed to the same thing: dead mag. Nothing I tried got the magazine to show up on either a Mac or a Red camera. According to Disk Utility and System Profiler, nothing was even plugged in. Hard to try software options when your hardware is, somehow, just not completing a circuit. :frown2:

Unfortunately (or fortunately, I guess) for this discussion, the mag in question isn't my own. It's the mag of the company I work for in my day-job. And due to corporate BS purchasing policies, we have to buy our Red gear through a third party. The mag was sent back to Red (should still be under warranty, I believe), but I have no idea when I'll hear back on it, due to the chain of people it has to go through to get to Red, and then back again to get back into my hands.

In perfect honesty, I wouldn't want anyone to be terribly concerned about this on a daily basis. My day-job involves keeping track of massive amounts of data, some of it on hard drives, some on LTO tapes. Drives fail. Even if you use a drive type where only one out of every 10,000 fails, if you buy 2 and happen to get that 1, you'll see a 50% fail rate instead of the truthful .01% fail rate.

We hadn't yet shot to that Mag on that day, so in my view, no harm done. Drives fail. Except for our 7 16GB CF cards, 3 640GB Red Hard Drives, and additional 128GB SSD Mag. Those haven't failed yet.
