  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED = "MADE IN HOLLYWOOD"

It can only be called "Made in America", if the components are made in America. "Assembled in America" doesn't have the same ring about it...

Anyway, I don't think young aspiring filmmakers care one hoot where a camera is made. They only want to know if it's cheap, if they can make it work and if they can convince the lead actress to take her top off for the all important skinny dipping scene...

Oh, and BTW Airbus ain't French. It's European. Parts are designed and built all over Europe and assembled in France:-)

I just want to add that I generally AGREE that it shouldn't matter where a camera is made. And if RED wants to succeed as a global company, then it's American origins really shouldn't become self-defining.

I suppose I wrote this thread because I do find home-grown, American DSLR enthusiasm to trend anarchically ANTI-RED. America is defined by a powerful sense of individualism, on the notion that TALENT & HARD WORK get you ahead, not MATERIAL advantage. So to me it makes sense why the DSLR crowd wants to hack the 5D and shoot RAW, and are categorically opposed to the amount of $$$ RED asks them to invest.

I suppose I was hoping a more targeted "MADE IN USA" campaign would at least assuage their contempt. Give them at least one reason to root for RED. But for all intensive purposes this is an un-winnable crowd anyway - for them, it's a badge of honor to shoot budget, and make it look Hollywood. Just like it is to trump the latest gadget, and bash whatever appears over-priced (ie RED). Which I get.

I think I was a little naive to think a slogan could change anything.

Nick,

I think companies that manufacture their gear in their own back yard should be applauded. There are too many companies profiting from cheap labour in third world countries. Look at that awful mess in Dhaka - a thousand dead so people in Europe and America can have cheap shirts. Something has to change. For my money "We employ local" says more about a company than "Made In wherever". Maybe there's something catchier though...

Correct me if i am wrong, but are not the core components for most electronics built where they are because the manufacturing processes for ASICs, circuit boards, etc considered too toxic to the environment to be permitted in North America and Europe?
I am not saying they are less toxic where they are, but that regulation has not caught up with the factories there.

I am a little conflicted on the prominence of the camera logo. I am proud to have one of these cameras.
However, in most other cases I personally do not like to flaunt branding on anything I wear or carry.
just my old punk rock roots there.. we used to cut branding badges and labels off of our clothing in my part of the world...

and currently have to hunt for setwear that has no visible logos (and is black or muted in color.. just in case I end up in visible to production)

though, when in a band, I went with a "wear only your own band's t-shirts on stage ideal"

So.. is this a "MY BAND" situation, or a "don't be a jerk" situation?

My questions were what is holly wood using to make great pictures?? All the cameras were made in Germany and in the 100 to 300 thousand dollar range until now. RED tip the scale for people buying the old 16mm film cameras and film because we still couldn't afford the 35mm cameras or the film. I wanted digital to take over film so we could have a chance to make films, I have canon GL1's, JVC, Sony, éclair NPR, Éclair ACL and then I heard about RED. I was like yeah right no one can beat film because they won't let anyone in the game and Panavision along with Sony cine, and Phantom cameras are setup for the digital ideas. Man we don't have a chance but then boom!! the RED ONE swept the nation, then MX,EPIC,SCARLET now DRAGON! I still couldn't afford any of it until red said lets give them a chance. These cameras are proven to deliver that beautiful film look that I dreamed of for so many years. We have been through so much man ...buying cameras that change the next year DV,HDV, HD 1080i, 1080P,2K,16mm, super 16mm, ultra 16mm invest in one red camera 4K,5K,6K. Now the right change is good as RED grows and gets better you can still make cine movie's with RED over all and they give you the option to choose your look, camera and direction you want to go. Say what you say.. I'm grounded bro. in a company that's not scared to change the world like Bill gates did.

Hollywood is not using cameras to make movies, they are using money! (kidding, sort of)

Yeah but top dollar gets you great films and equipment to use. Film or cine Digital

Being Made in America means a lot to me. But I feel like I am the exception to this rule. I have actually read on some of the DSLR forums that they prefer Japanese equipment.

Does it matter where your tool was made? I think people should us the best tool avaliable to them regardless of where it was made. However when the best tool available comes from my home country, it is inspiring.

As a young aspiring filmmaker, I agree with all 3 of your points.

They both had visions of change and they made it happen.

Does anyone remember the red bodies that were posted and they had different colors? I was wondering if they were going to offer those one day.
