Here it would be a place to talk about comparison between

RED M-X and ARRI Alev III sensor.

Your thoughts about these two big competitors would be appreciated here.

It starts with both published sensor Dynamic Range test charts:

ARRI Alev III sensor Dynamic Range test chart is "intentionally flipped horizontal" just to have a better idea visually about what both charts would like to show...

It would be nice to have a constructive discussion without any "funny" comments, "bad jokes" and a similar forum noise...

Also don't forget that RED M-X and ARRI Alev III still didn't officially "meet" in any kind of comparison test.

All it is still at the level of a huge speculation.

Yesterday I saw the Test projection of their Alev III footage against Competitor A (F35 I guess?), and it does hold up quite good at the big screen, and it has lots of shadowdetail.

I was also impressed by the low noise and the sensitivity of 800 asa.

I think and hope the RED Mysterium-X should be in the same ballpark or better.

It was funny that the Rep. somehow admitted that their new cam design is strongly inspired on the RED model.

Jeff,

thanks for your very nice report.

That's exactly what I wanted to "hear".

ARRI new camera design is obviously "inspired" by RED in many ways and levels.

Hopefully RED would continue to "hold" and even "lead" in this sort of competition.

As you say, sanjin, published data so far means it is almost impossible to predict which will be the better camera. Let the cameras come out, let people use them to tell their stories, and then comparisons can be made. As discussed endlessley before, it is not just about data sheets put out by manufacturers who will project the data to suit their particular product. I am sure the epic will be good and better than the red one. I am sure the ARRI will be a good camera. Lighting, lenses, delivery medium and who is behind the lens have an equally important roll. Let the cameras come out before trying to predict who, if there ever needs to be, is the winner.

You've already got a pretty good camera. Get out there and make something. The kit is pretty important, and I know easy it is to get obsessed with getting every little bit of sexy black/shiny kit,but ultimately it's the stories that connect with an audience that count.

The charts indicate that both sensors are similar in DR characteristics and both claim they are clean at iso800 but Arri is 3.5k sensor and Epic is 5k sensor. Arri is 60fps and Epic is 100fps. Arri is twice the price and Epic has Redcode. If Arri used Red as inspiration they looked backward and not forward.
