  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hello

I rented out my RED and in just 2 days of renting it came back with a scratch..

Is there any product recommended to try to buff out the very light scratch that still somehow bothers the hell out of me as its on my face every-time i look at the monitor.?

Also, any adhesive film i can use to protect the screen? Thanks

The only place i specifically requested serious caution was the lcd screen and the sensor of the camera. Unfortunately a scratch is on the screen now.. How on earth are people using the cameras?? Im scared to think how the camera was treated. But the good thing the guy who rented it for me is a very very good man who runs a rental shop and he'll exchange with a new one when he gets it.. :)
 
Shit happens on productions no matter how careful you try to be. If your renting your gear expect it, count on it and you won't be dissapointed. That's what insurance is for. The camera is not a baby and should be treated with respect but not treated different than any other camera on the market. Its going to take some abuse no matter what.

After I had a client put a small scratch in my LCD I bought the clear screen protectors that you can put on your laptop screen or iPhone to protect it from that problem. But even that's not enough. Some operators for some stupid reason will hold the LCD in their hands every now and then and press their thumbs into the LCD screen causing it to leave a dark impression that will not go away. To prevent this, filmtools.com has a anti-glare glass protector that velcros onto the LCD for both the 5.6 and 7' LCD. I would recommend both of these as safety precautions. However, its easy for operators to rip off that glass protector if they feel its obtrusive to their view for any reason. That's why you should get both the clear thin protector and the glass.
If you don't want to spend the money on the glass protector from filmtools.com you could just go to Home Depot and get some $5.00 plexi-glass, and cut it yourself. That's what I did and although its not great in all situations it works quite well.

i suggested that and the renting guy told me not to put one. that people rip them off anyway :( but i knew this was going to happen.. anyway.. any liquid for the scratch? its a very light one, but it stares at me :S The insurance doesnt cover scratches
 
Lesson learned...

Do you have a rental contract that spells out damages and coverage of such? Part of my rental fees are a damage deposit. I require my rented LCD to go out with a screen protector - it's similar to the filmtools one, but I made it myself out of 2mm clear polycarbonate. If they take it off, it's at their own risk. If the LCD returns with a scratch on the actual screen or other damage (like the impressions Mike mentioned), the customer doesn't get their damage deposit back and depending on the extent of the damage, may get billed for repairs or new components. I haven't had any problems yet, but I also rarely rent out my gear, almost never without myself or trusted tech / DIT present.

You can try to buff the scratch with a very fine microfiber cloth, but chances are that it's there to stay.

General scratches and signs of use are something to be expected with rentals. But there are precautions that can be take, like screen protectors. And those precautions also become a level of coverage for you and liability for the renter. Once again, the screen protector. You know damn well the renter will be taking it off, but you can also make it perfectly clear that when they do, it's their ass on the line.

i feel frustrated because i had the right instinct to warn about it AND to demand a plastic film in front of it.. lesson learned.. i should have forced it.

You may want to try Novus 1 from Tap plastics, http://www.tapplastics.com/shop/product.php?pid=428&. I have used it on acrylic and plexi with good results. But to be honest I'm not sure how it will work on the LCD face. Also Tap is a good source for various plastics and they will custom cut it for a small fee.
