I know this is a dumb question but, I'm going to be shooting my Red camera on a 20 foot jib and I was wondering if there is anyway I can use it as the monitor? I understand that it uses the power from the camera to run but I was wondering in there was anyway around that? I really don't have the money at this time to buy another monitor. So it would be great is some how I could use the LCD that comes with my Red. Thanks.

how about a computer monitor with a DVI-HDMI adaptor?
You can run a 30ft cable with no problem.

Total cost: about $135.00 for cable and adaptor.. You or someone you know should have a computer monitor with a DVI input

HDMI is gonna be your best bet as Jay mentioned. I purchased a low profile Hanns-G 17" widescreen monitor for less than $200 from newegg and it works incredibly well for the price..

battery/inverter from Xantrex works well.

Jarred,

Was it this one for $149? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824254018

And it does everything needed for a Red preview monitor? (With Menus, without) And does it have a "pixel for pixel" mode? Scaling?

I've been holding off buying one until I find the right, cheap, one that I know will work. And if you endorse it--I'm there!!!!

Best Regards,

Thom

Yeah... we bought a bunch of monitors so we could see which worked and which one didnt.. and this one was by far the best one i found.. it works great.

Thanks for the heads up on the monitor and inverter... I was looking for a solution. for myself as well.

Good luck prepping for NAB, we are all very excited and appreciative of the TEAM's efforts.

Hey, I was in Wal Mart the other day and I got a cable with HDMI on one end and DVI on the other - $50!

By the way, I just tracked down an inverter that I'm going to try. The best part about it is that it is silent. It's made by APC and it's discontinued, but since the monitor only draws 20 watts I think it should work fine. Their replacement is now 150 watts and has a fan--which I'm trying to avoid.

http://www.amazon.com/APC-Auto-Power-Inverter-120V/dp/tech-data/B00006BBI8/ref=de_a_smtd

I have a power converter already rated at 200 watts but it is so noisy as it has an internal fan. This one is fanless and therefore 0db.

I also found this 12 battery pack:

http://www.powerstream.com/PST-MP3500.htm

From my reading the PST-BP200-HR22 will drive 20 watts for over 13 hours.

Not bad for 146$

Does anyone see any problem with this combo?

Hey thanks for the response. This helps.

Sorry I'm a little out of touch when it comes to these things but is there any kind of adaptor you can get for a laptop that would work? Like videodisc I'm going to be in some pretty remote locations and the less gear I have to carry the better.

The DVI on your laptop is out so what you would need, I think, is some sort of HD in for your laptop (like eyeTV) but most of those are tuner based for TV in. Most of the Video in's for laptops are analog so you would need to convert the DVI/HDMI digital output to analog only to convert it back to digital to view it.

Who knows what NAB may bring. Some sort of DVI/HDMI input to a laptop would be a very welcome product--I just haven't found anyone who is doing it.
