I've got a shoot coming up that involves building a cage in a sports car and shooting hot laps on a track. Also a shooting from a camera car, but not as aggressively, but still more than normal highway speeds and G forces. I've shot Red from camera cars with no problem, but this will be more extreme.

After an unpleasant experience with Red and a Tyler Nose Mount, I'm worried about the global shutter.

I would greatly appreciate any advice on this from those who have done this.

Also, are the Red Drives out of the question? Are RAM drives or CF cards required for these shots?

Thank you!

Leo

Leo - do tell us about the Tyler Nose Mount and Global shutter problem.

Also, if you need a cage built - I can probably do that for you.

I tried shooting Red One on a Tyler Nose Mount on a Jet Ranger, used Red RAM, and all the footage was NG. Threw on the VariCam and all was good. I'm not knocking Red; I could have used a stabilized mount, but the Tyler is what I had available.

Thanks for the offer on the cage, Douglas; if my regular rigger is not available, I'll contact you.

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo

Compare and contrast to:

The second one, shot on 7D, was not at full speed. The first, on RED ONE (non-MX) was at full speed.

Mind you, internally there was a far more rigid mount (to the roll bar) than the external shot (suctioned to the bodywork with stiffening bars).

Hi Cail,

I'm having a hard time seeing the heat lines you mention on the the first Vimeo link, it might be due to the very poor monitor I'm using to look at this right now. For those not fluent in centigrade, 55 degrees Celsius is 131 fahrenheit, that's pretty hot. How long was the camera in there ? I had no idea it got that hot in one of those cars.

Cheers,
Damien
