As far as we know, the first 4K digital cinema shoot in Africa is now underway in Rwanda. We're shooting with RED #184, thanks to RED working their tails off to deliver the camera just in time - it arrived less than 24 hours before the flight was due to depart from San Francisco.

I would not recommend anyone ever attempt such a feat... an untested, unfamiliar system on a long journey to place where there is no backup. (Well... we have an HVX-200 along as backup - but does that count?)

We had a crash course into our first day of shooting - due to scheduling issues on the ground, one of our most important location shoots had to happen within 24 hours of arriving, jet-lag and all. But it's now the end of day one, and I've got 86 GB of pristine 2K & 4K footage downloading onto my drive system.

We've had our issues. A camera audio channel has gone down, we're getting serious noise in the audio system after about 20 minutes of the camera being on (not huge since we're recording double-system), and one of our CF cards appears to be faulty (caught soon enough to not cause a disaster). Despite some growing pains, one thing is for sure... this thing shoots incredible images.

Again... not recommended, and we went in knowing the risks we are taking. But I am already pumped about what we'll be coming home with.

FYI: I won't likely be able to respond to messages on this thread, at least for a couple weeks... but wanted y'all to know we're making history here. Here's a shot of the RED in it's native environment...

I remember your waiting for your cam one day before flying. I remember Jim telling you "you'll get it". I hope this crazy shooting will all be good remembrances!

Have a nice stay in Africa!

Trevor:

Congratulation on getting their first; I have a schedule August 2009 shoot in Rwanda and Tanzania. If all quiets down by August of this year I am return to Kenya for a shoot that I did location scouting last August 07

I am looking at the Red One for these shoots so I would be interested and look forward to your updates. (I would appreciate if you would email me directly on your RED ONE package setup (approximate weight, lens and what film cases you brought to Africa?)

Again OUTSTANDING!

Bob

Great Stuff ! We look forward to a few stills!
The audio may clean up if you turn off the P48 and power the mic by
using T power or a battery.

Attaboy Trevor!

Good luck with the shoot!

Hey Trevor,
Long time no see. Glad to hear you got your camera in time. Hopefully those issues will be worked out quickly! You must have the 1st red in Vancouver?!
Looking forward to hearing and seeing more from the trip!
Cheers,
