  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red in OZ

We just got pushed back to Nov 30 on ours; Lemac will have theirs (mid 60s) very soon.

mmm I was chatting with John from Lemac the other day at the Barry Green P2 event in Melbourne. I asked him about how his two cameras were going. His response on the Red was less than flattering. One of them has already gone back to the states for repair.

So, how are the other aussie RED's holding up?

Hey ANZRUG-gers,

Is anyone else going to the DMF at the Sydney Convention Centre this week? While I don't think a RED will be there, S*ny and all the other major camera vendors will be sporting their latest offerings.

You can get a free ticket by going to their website: http://www.digitalmedia.com.au/node/145

Let me know if anyone's interested in meeting up - My mobile is 0408 612 680 or email Luke.Goddard@three.com.au

I think you got John on the day he was having 16 different types of problems - it has been much better I just walked in the door from being on set of the Feature "Nothing Men" that has John's two cameras at the moment.

Our is working well (we never had the air filters !!!) and we are now renting ours - with a beta version of the working EVF. We have been testing our camera a lot and I think John was unlucky with some things...
But he reported most of those issues today himself at DMW during his talk.

Mike

PS
Just for the record we are working side by side with Lemac and our RED #22 will rent eventually through them.

This is what I've been concerned about. Long time without it and very expensive to move it back and forth. Would be a downer to pay $800 in shipping and lose your camera for a month each time.

I'm hoping some kind of local support will be introduced. At least a certified repairer that stocks some parts.
We'll see.

I am not sure what you are meaning? Losing a month ????

I know that John has 2 cameras here in operation - neither has been sent back to the USA and another is being SENT here to help them out.

I shipped mine back to the USA for one thing to be done and it was turned around in one day and FED ex back it took 7 calender days Sydney - LA - Sydney , which i was extremely happy about.

I am not sure what your point is ? Perhaps I am missing something - sorry?

Was chatting to Lemac yesterday about RED. They seemed pretty happy with them and mentioned that they may become a certified service option for Australia.

I can also back Mike up on this. We have turned around our camera in 7 days (full week) Auckland to Orange County, to Auckland. Jim has talked about establishing a support centre in Singapore, but whether it be in Singapore or Sydney I would be still looking at a 5 working day turn around.

The support cost of maintaining your Red should be factored into your rental rate.

Mike

Okay, a month is certainly exaggerating, a week is a tremendous result. :)

Sorry Mike, I didn't mean to sound negative. I LOVE what RED are doing and am completely amazed by the level of service and commitment they have demonstrated.

It's just my experience as a little guy sending cameras and decks in for local repair, it's gone for a while. I would have thought this would be compounded with international travel, but as you say, it only adds a couple of days on each end. Would love to have an improved experience.

I'm also considering that when I get my camera, there will be over 2000 units out there and it would be great if RED can scale their service with the number of cameras.

But there is still the cost of moving the camera back and forth. I suppose if you were just shipping the body, no lenses or accessories, it wouldn't quite cost $800 for the roundtrip either. Just me exaggerating again. :)

It all comes down to a desire to have some level of local support.

Cheers,

Jim

Hey Everyone
Been searching the net for a while and was glad to see that someone had setup this post (people tend to forget about this big little island)
I'm a melbourne based DP looking at a shooting a film clip for a big local hip hop act on the RED Camera. Any owner/operators out there in Vic who can share there experience? Has anyone hired the Cam that Lemac has?
My main concerns are workflow orientated at the moment. Can anyone share there workflow experience in Australia/Victoria? I'm looking at shooting at 2K Rez editing in FCP on a Dual G5 setup then Grading/Onlining on Scratch at Complete Post or similar.
Sorry bout all the questions but where shooting in a week and a half and I have to make a decision to go RED or DVCPro HD/P2.
Bit concerned about the "Bleeding Edge Technology" aspect of the RED Camera and don't want to get caught in the post workflow and have a client hanging while I break my brain trying workarounds.

Cheers

TVC shot in Syney

TVC shot in Syney

I'd just like to thank Mike, Jimmy and cam#22 for the TVC shoot we shot yesterday. As far as I Know it is the first one shot in Australia with the intention for release (as opposed to tests). It was an amazing experience and the images... Well let's just say I am still trying to get my breath back. As Toby Oliver ACS said, "it's not 35mm and it's not video, it's an image of its own" Working with an experienced DOP who is willing to think out of the box helps.

Luckily the client knew that we were in experimental land and was understanding. As a producer I also had to have a backup plan. Obviously the workflow is pretty well different from anything else. I think me reading these boards for the last year has paid off. There's a lot more to learn and I will be very eager to do more shoots with this camera.

Anyone who thinks why shoot 4k to scale down standard def or HD really has to rethink their mental processes and get their head around it.

I'd like to thank a lot of people on these boards for sharing information and helping me come to grips with the tech. Particularly Mike and David. I'd also encourage any future owners or anyone interested in using this camera to do Mike's online course @ fxphd. It will save you grief.

RED in Aus/NZ continuation

RED in Aus/NZ continuation

Hi

To carry further Red in Aus/NZ has anyone heard any rumblings in the distance about a possible bootcamp in the area of the type being discussed here?

HTML:
http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=7007

With several cameras making the journey to the region in the near future I was wondering if people were interested?

Draegar, I'd be very keen (although I don't expect our cameras until mid year, given the delivery history...).

Hi JimPress

Excellent. I'm in the same boat timewise, fingers crossed.
I'm wondering if previously established Oz RED get-together ideas couldn't be built on. I'd be assuming an Eastern States convergence point.

I'll get a thread going on REDANZ as well.
