  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red in OZ

Good to meet you at SMPTE, Brainstorm. Good demo of Quantel Pablo 4K online system. Didn't get a price but a few $A100,000 was mentioned.

The Sony 4K projector ($A160,000) didn't blow my socks off even on Mystic India. Could have been some weird shit on setup or maybe it wasn't full 4K. I worked out my viewing angle of the screen was 130 degrees which says I should be seeing full rez 4K.....maybe I'm going blind.
Interesting to note the Sony 4K projector needs 4 dual HD-SDI connections to drive it. Also interesting that AFTRS has purchased a sony 4K projector and who was that cinema in Melbourne?.....Crown??
DF

Likewise David. I enjoyed chatting with you too!

I suspect the Quantel Pablo system would be well over the half-million $ mark. I've been doing some work for a production in New Zealand over recent years and they just installed a new Quantel iQ system in their online suite. Even that has a list price above that, and it can't handle 4K.

I was really impressed by the images of the Sony 4K projector, even when it running pics shot at 1080. I don't recall which cinema it was in Melbourne that purchased one.

Also, did you know that Broadcom (in Artarmon) have a 2K cinema which can be hired for screenings, watching rushes, crew viewings, etc? Could be handy when you get your RED and want to see some images projected.

Just a quick note:

Australia Rocks! I'm over here for a couple of weeks (from L.A.), and I just have to say how incredible the first few days have been.

You Aussie's know a good time and are laid back and very cool. Sydney is amazing... and Cronulla beach is a great time.

looking forward to the rest of our stay... which may include Bondi, Hunter Valley, the Blue Mountains, and Darling Harbor... we'll see where the adventure takes us...

Rock on.

Happy to hear you're having a good time Casey! I forget to tell you before, if you want to know what music is on around the city's bars and clubs, go down to a record store and pick up a copy of one of the free gig guides, like 'Drum Media' or '3D'. They'll tell you what's on.

Cheers

I don't recall which cinema it was in Melbourne that purchased one.

The Capitol Theatre, owned by RMIT - exciting, since I know some of the AVS guys there who spoke very highly of the projector. They haven't, however, purchased a playback server (e.g. QuVis); I think they're waiting for a slightly cheaper alternative.

I'd be interested in any local Oz Red group.

I am camera 22 - so we are looking good for NAB timeframe

just an update: Had an incredible time in Sydney and the surrounding areas. We made it up to the Blue Mountains, Hunter Valley, Bondi, The Rocks, Opera House, Harbor Bridge, etc.... and stayed both at Cronulla Beach and then at Darling Harbor...

What a beautiful city and country.

Thanks to everyone who gave advice on places to visit.

We'll definitely come back...

Cheers,

-CG

I'll second that Casey. I've been all over Oz on several extended production trips. Can't wait to go back...

Gibby,

Yep, we just got back (still on Aussie time as you can see) and already I'd love to go back... It was a perfect time of year to visit, just gorgeous.

Oh, and one other great stop was the IMAX theatre in Darling Harbor... which is the world's largest. They had some great films playing and while I was watching , I couldn't help but think of what Red 4K would look like on that large a screen...

I heard someone say (Graeme, i think) that IMAX was an experience at 4:3 with 65/70mm depths of field. Meaning as well as the 3D effect, you're drawn in to this small, in focus field, in the middle of the screen with all the rest for effect.
But yeah, I take my 4 year old there a bit and love to see him reach out and try to touch the 'image'. Very glad you had a nice time in Oz.

Mike,
Nice fx site......

Be great to start a local user group for a bucket load of reasons.
I guess the first thing is we're distributed over a bit of land, but a little thing like that shouldn't stop us.

I'm sure we all want to see a RED camera or show what it can do.

Maybe as well as this thread we could get an email list of people interested in Red.
Get a demo or screening arranged. Whatever you want. thoughts/ideas?

cheers,

DF

Oz Red points

Oz Red points

Here are a few thoughts:

1. it is really important to educate producers to use the RED, more importantly to be comfortable with a data workflow.

2. It will be important to any producer that there are other Red cameras around - for backup.

3. It would be great to be able to cross hire some options - in case everyone does not have every option.

4. It would be nice to get a sensible idea on rental rates (day rates) so we can afford to invest further.

5. There will be a huge roll in educating camera assistants and DOPs, working with the ACS etc ...

6. There will be fun to be had showing and testing Red on Stedicams / milos / etc etc

7. Workflow - storage and file systems will all be critical - we are already looking at a Codex box.

At the moment I know of

camera 21 - NZ
camera 22 - me
camera 444 - david farland

As we will get one of the first cameras - clearly it would be great to get any other Red Users - who are still waiting - to get some hands on time - and build a local community.

Pur attititude is very clear - there is much much more to be gained by sharing and working together to educate the market - than competiting. I did work on promoting the original Panavision 900 HDCAM - and that openned my eyes to how much education is need to make producers come around. While we may see a 4k tapeless workflow as ground breaking - most will see it as unproven and risky.

Anything we can do to make the workflow seem stable - accepted and tested the better.

I suggest SMPTE in July could be perfect for a major Red user event. After NAb we should look to get as many key players involved as possible - this includes NLE, telecine graders, DOPs etc etc. I'd love to show Red from Camera to DaVinci grade etc...

Education will be everything, well education and co-operation.

Internally we will also we working with Red users in NY and LA.

What do you think?

Is this the best place to formulate the plan - or would you and others like us to take it off line ? I'd like to see non-owners as included as possible - it isnt about ownership - its about professional workflow and production solutions.

Mike,
You’ve brought up a lot of good points here……practically a Sony/Panasonic marketing plan without the actual sales requirements. You mention very practical support requirements for the camera.

Education
Support infrastructure
Professional workflow
Production techniques

There is a mix of technical focus and experience of people wishing to know about and be involved with RED.

For now I think we should discuss this in the RED forum mainly because there a so many eyes reading who can contribute ideas.
I think you’ve raised some important points that have not been answered in the RED forum and that would benefit all local user groups i.e., technical support, user training.
I’m hoping RED Inc. also helps out in these regards but there’s not substitute for practical experience.

Anyone else want add or flesh out an area that should be covered or initiative undertaken or just say what they want to get out of this group?

Cheers,

Dave,

Agreed lets talk here - and you know the RED community is a huge benefit of the RED... but I really believe that sharing and working together is the key to quick update in the broad production community.

We are also looking at doing some international joint education stuff...

Interestingly - there is a production RED camera lecture at NAB - in the main NAB program ...
Anyone know who is doing this ?

Mike

242 here, I know 241 is in Melbourne as well but it isn't ours, and there's a #1xx as well to my knowledge.

An education campaign is a great idea; and anything that helps bring producers around has my full support. I know it's been hard enough without any hard evidence to convince people of the potential, I don't imagine it will be magically easier once I've got a camera in my hands.

Excellent..

Here is my 2 C... for many productions - the rental price is well useful - but as it is not going to be the Panavision Genesis A$5000 a day - it will be fine.. more to the point - it wont be an issue... (great for us of course - but I am now putting my self in the place of a producer looking to use the camera)

The 4K will be great - but again frankly you'd have to think people are very unlikely to use 4K - they will use 2K or HD - but rarely 4K... of course image quality will be a big issues - but I dont think it will be the primary issue...

Being able to shoot digital is great - since there are no film stock, processing or transfer costs... but the biggest issue I am guessing will be..

Risk - how is this going to work?... who knows how to operate with it ?... how will I edit, grade ?- how will we do rushes ? what happens if something goes wrong on set ?... are there any unexpected issues ? Can we fit it to a steadicam/hot head/car mount/crane.. and most of all - this is tapeless - so how do we shoot - how do we do mag changes etc... "it is all so different to what we are used to and what we know works"...

The other key aspect will be testing - watch EVERYONE wil want to take the camera and do tests... side by side, exposure etc etc - if we could bunch a few of these tests - so they were done with say the ACS - then we could save weeks if not months of endless test and no actual production.

When the 900 came out - everyone and their dog wanted to borrow the cameras for free and test them.

Howdy OZ Red team...

Howdy OZ Red team...

Thought you'd all be interested to know that Lemac in Artarmon have also got reservations for two REDs... and they will be going into their hire stock. I was talking to their sales guy the other day and he mentioned the reservation numbers. I don't recall what they were, but I'm sure they were both under 1000.

This will be a handy back-up if anyone shooting with their own RED runs into technical problems and needs another camera ASAP.... or requires a second or third RED camera for a multi-camera shoot. Might also be a good source of technical support in the long run.

Cheers

They will be under 100; the reservations were made at NAB 2006 to my knowledge.
