Hello..

A friend of mine is bringing his RED over to Portugal from New York.
Anyone has an experience flying with a RED body they can share me?
I worry that padded inside a suitcase would be stolen.. but in hand luggage could be mistaken as a bomb, after all it looks unusual for a camera and its heavy.. 4.5 kilos!

I wonder if they will confiscate it..

Another question:
If you take out RED to other country, do you need a Carnet? Duties? Fees?
I have to go to shoot in Japan.

You should always have a carnet, and make sure you get it stamped when entering and exiting every country!

I had no trouble at all in Japan. They are pretty used to high tech gear.

Why? I've never had a carnet in my whole life for my gear, I never had any problems. Maybe I'm just lucky. Been around a lot though... My experience is that is more trouble with carnets, when bring samples, clothes etc..

I had actually thought of using FED-EX or UPS to ship the camera to where I was going. I really don't trust the airlines.

With professional gear you should use a carnet.

OK, Arno. I didn't bring my toys on our about 40 trips to the States, in Europe, Africa, China. "Professional" gear, worth much more then a RED, never a carnet, never any problem what so ever.

But as said; maybe I'm just lucky.

And as said again; when we have brought samples and clothes (I'm in fashion) with carnets - often a lot of hustle...

The Pelican 1510 is designed to fit carry on dimensions and is the perfect size for the RED body.

My father in law is a salesman for a company that makes high end imaging equipment and he flies around the country with stuff that looks like rocket launchers all the time. He said if he puts some literature about the equipment (brochure, etc.) in the case with the camera he gets a lot less grief from the airline inspectors. I put the RED brochure in the 1510 whenever we fly with it and we've never had a problem.

I'd say that you are one lucky DP, especially if you've travelled in Africa a lot!!!

Don't travel without a Carnet...get stopped just once without one and you'll understand. It will cost you money and time....lots and lots of time.

They are however a complete pain in the neck but look upon them as a necessary evil that ultimately is there to protect you and your kit.

Best wishes

Scott

JNAD,
At arrival do you walk through the customs green channel with the kit or go through the red channel and declare your pro kit?

I just walk! And if they asked (maybe once), I told them I'm there for a production and will leave with my gear in a couple of days, show them the return ticket.

Honestly I've only been to the Cape (but about ten times), and they are used to productions, never a problem. I may think it's special situation there, as they have a lot productions.

The other thing about Carnets is you have to understand how they work.

I know of one crew (who I won't name) that thought you kept a carnet in your pocket and only pulled it out if asked. Turns out that you actually need to get it stamped at each entry and exit point or it is invalid. That production spent a lot of money and time having some official-looking stamps applied 'unofficially', shall we say. Thank goodness for US dollars!

JNAD,
Do you walk through the red channel and tell the customs of the kit you are carrying and they let you in without a carnet

or

Do you walk through the green channel and hope that you will not be questioned?
