Hi,

We're just waiting to take delivery of our Red One and obviously we'll be paying VAT on it when it hits UK Shores. As well as VAT there's also import duty to factor in but does anyone know which category the Red One comes under because there are a few that could apply and their rates range from 0% to about 7%.

For instance, if it's classed as a digital camera the rate is 0%, but if it's a camcorder then the rate is 4.2%.

If anyone knows the answer, please do tell.

Cheers

Damian, I cannot stress this enough:

IF you have a bunch of stuff on order that are all coming in the same shipment:

FEDEX WILL TRY TO APPLY 1 (ONE) TARIC CODE ONLY TO THE ENTIRE SHIPMENT!!!

Worse still they will chose THE HIGHEST ONE!!!

For us, that was the LCD monitor... somewhere in the teens... like 14% or so.

So when they called and told me we had £4000 to pay in VAT and ID I said... you're 'aving a laugh mate...

They admitted their system is totally stupid and retarded and told me to Email them the Taric codes of each individual item in the shipment.

Which I did...

Since most of the items (including the Red One body) are 0%... they decided to apply that across the whole shipment

and consequently I DID NOT pay import duty on anything.

Just the VAT of course... no getting round that.

So PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT let them have their way. They are morons and don't deserve a dirty penny more than their due.

Having ranted thusly... I can't remember where I put the TARIC codes for all the gear... but I found them somewhere here on Reduser... so if you do some searching, you'll find them.

Good luck.

Hey Michael/John,

Thanks for your replies. Much appreciated. I'll certainly look out for Fedex pulling that trick Michael.

Quick question, can the guys at Red not classify the items on dispatch? Otherwise how do fedex know what is in the boxes? It would save a lot of messing about surely?

Yes they did this to me and Im still trying to sort it out after 18 months. its a digital stills camera which is a low taric code not the video one........

This is is what I was told by Red who have been very helpful.

HTS shown on our invoices is from the United States Harmonized Tariff Schedule - 8525.80.5050.

Each country has minor variances to the last 4 digits of the classification. It is our understanding that for the European Union, the proper tariff code is EU-TARIC 8525.80.9100; however, you need to double check with a local Customs broker.

The link to the EU site is here.

Michael's point is good..

At least he sees method to custom madness. I thought they just made it up as they went along. One of my cameras I paid a fortune in duties and the other I paid nearly nothing.

I've started getting my Red stuff from Red pinewood for this very reason.

RED do supply the classification - we recieved a complete list with the code for each component as part of the invoicing documentation.
8525.80.5050 is the magic number for Australia which describes a digital still camera.
I am surprised to see in another post the suggestion that 8525.80.9100 is considered appropriate in Europe - this appears to describe a digital video recorder or some similar technology which the RED is certainly not

Think UK TARIC code should be 8525.80.3000 as a digital stills camera - 0% customs import duty. Everything else being an accessory for digital stills camera should be 8529902000. And yes, it's worth querying if more than 0% duty is applied.

A member of the Bomb Squad at Red quoted 8525809100 too. There seems to be a lot of different numbers being posted I honestly don't know which is the right one.

I guess the problem is, If I check with a local broker, what do I tell them the RED One is? Video Camera? Digital Camera? Digital Still Camera?

Help!

I have to head out to work now, but when I get back... I'll dig through my archives and see if I can find the ones we used.. which are for the UK.

It sounds as though the difference in codes are because the USA uses different codes... and maybe Oz uses different codes too... so you need UK ones... I'll try to find mine.

Mik.

Thanks Mik. That would be great!

RED can only put their own US codes on for export - which differ in the last 4 digits.

Coming into the EU, the UK code should be 0% 8525 80 3000 for "Digital Cameras", which is what you should quote to Fedex if there is a dispute. Just tell them that this is the usual code which has been used for RED One cameras have been imported into the UK.

That's why I ordered a Red one and all accessories from Red Europe Ltd at Pinewood.
It saves worrying about all this stuff, and it's where your camera will go for any warranty issues.
Alan Piper there is very helpful.

I Didn't even know you could order the Red One anywhere other than via Red.com. Why did Red not recommend the Pinewood option when they knew I was ordering from the UK?

Alan Piper at Pinewood is super helpful, but RED Pinewood sadly still does not appear to be a full facility repair centre, unlike RED Canada it seems. Don't know about RED Japan.

Reminds me I must get round to sending off my RED dead 16GB CF card to RED USA asap...!

damn it. I don't have those TARIC codes on the external drive I have with me here. The codes are with my files back in London... but I'm not going to have access to those for a while... I'm really sorry...

But seriously... they're up on the site here somewhere. Good luck.

Mik.
