  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED import duty

I'm not completely sure, but I don't think you can just pick it up in another country and then just ship it back to another straight away, as that is still importing it.

If you were to take delivery in the states say, you have to wait a year before you can bring it back to the UK and not incure import duty.

You might be able to bring it back as hand luggage and chance not getting stopped....but I wouldn't risk it!

A flight to Oz is not exactly cheap, would you really save any money.

These are the codes used in Canada - do you have a link to the UK tariffs?

TV cameras come under: 8525.80.30 - free
Lenses come under: 9002.11.10 - free

Graeme, do you know if there is any way to avoid paying the GST? Since we get it back anyways, it would be nice just not to pay it up front.

Do they want PST too? I don't know anything. And how much of this do I have to learn, and how much will Red just take care of when they ship it too me?

Hi everyone
I'm very concern about this custom duty things, please anyone owner of Red in France to tell us what the actual rate is, apart from alread huge 19.60% sales tax. I'm seriously considering coming directly to the US to fetch the camera.

How big are the problems you get by taking delivery in another territory? Is it just the VAT man?

Will an insurance company insure assets that had been brought into a territory without import duty being paid?

Hi,

Yes you can pay an insurance company a premium, but they would not have to pay you out unless you told them the whole story first.

Sales Tax for California Only...

Sales Tax for California Only...

can i take purchase of my camera in Tijuana? (no sales tax) haha...

we can set up a huge gathering/red boot camp down in mexico.. we can take delivery tax free...

Yeah... You could do that... OR you could take delivery in any of the 49 remaining States.

It's tricky. A lot of states, including California have what is called Use Tax which must be paid on equipment that was purchased outside of California. Use Tax is for equipment that is making you money. So if you work/live in CA, you you have your Red sent to Arkansas, then you still have to pay the Use Tax at the end of the year, which is roughly the same as the CA State Sales Tax.

This is what my accountant told me. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

This is correct, its all part of being in business.

Ah... I'll bite the bullet and pay my taxes. :( I'll hope to claim it back at the end of the year.

Loophole

It's tricky. A lot of states, including California have what is called Use Tax which must be paid on equipment that was purchased outside of California.

After looking into this a little further, You're right. Until recently, you could avoid paying the California Use Tax by keeping the equipment out-of-state for 90-days. However, our Governator recently amended the loophole--thus, equipment must now be kept out-of-state for 1-year to avoid paying use tax.

From what I understand, Use Tax is exercised by the honor-system. Meaning, it's up to the end-user to report the taxes to the government, i.e., if they are receiving the equipment out-of-state and using it in California.

Stupid

Stupid

Those considering not paying international duty remember that every time you return from travel abroad with this equipment you are at risk of being questioned by customs officers, who will ask where did you buy the equipment?

If you sign a customs carnet (a temporary import export document) then you are confirming that all local import duties have been paid, when they haven't and you are committing an offence.

If you sell the camera you are committing an offence!

Illegal importation of kit worth $30k is STUPID if you get away with it or not.

In Europe, simply present the kit at the goods to declare counter, thats the RED channel :) pay the man duty and vat and walk out of the airport a free man....

Thanks Mike,

valuable information. Do you know if this rate was applied automatically by UK customs? Was it conetested by the owner before they applied this rate?

What did Red charge to ship?
