  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

OK i love that fact that the prices are dropping to help more people own camera and make beautiful stuff.....but i think if u guys have covered your R&D then the best thing u could do is drop the price of RED ROCKET to like $995 ...The Alexa is busy not because it the best camera because any one with half a brain knows 1080p and 5k are miles apart ...But because it easy and any idiot can work with prores4444 and they are !!! Once you own a RED ROCKET .r3d became as easy as prores and you have all the info something that i don't think must of the world have really played with... 90% of the footage out there will only ever get viewed on a 1080p monitor at the moment there is know way of showing clients the added value plus post houses in london at least are scared of .r3d and 4k/5k. Bring red rocket to price that makes it a no brainer and watch the whole world of post eyes light up...these are the guys recommending you shoot alexa plus the guys asking for 1080p prores or 1080p 10 bit DPX

The Busiest camera will be the must cost effective over all aspects of the production and the best picture

But don't take this wrong way i love what your doing hence the gear i buy from you guys plus i think the meizler is a massive step forward to bridge the gap ...
my worry is that so many people haven't realised that the cleverist thing that come from RED is REDCODE a 5k raw file almost the same size as a 1080p prores ....make REDCODE rule and became "the Format" then everything you make will always have value.....If we Shot REDCODE, Post REDCODE, grade REDCODE, master REDCODE.. then RED is the standard i won't to hear that post house are asking for alexa raw files turned to REDCODE because it easier to work with!!!!

REDCODE files should become the new DIGI BETA/HDCAM something the station can broadcast and producers feel comfortable with

P.s why not make a RED ROCKET in a little box that can be plugged in thunderbolt or plugged in to pci e board so it easy to swap from machine to machine.

I agree...the last key to the puzzle is to have better or realtime full resolution redcode playback whether through a much cheaper redrocket, GPU debayering or what ever...Redcode is the gem of the RED workflow...but it's also its weakness due to the very heavy processing need and expensive red rocket card.

RED should enable debayering through non-proprietary GPUs, such as Nvidias. I'm not sure why they chose to make it proprietary - did they do it to protect their technology, or as an additional revenue source?

In the long run they will be served by giving customers more options to debayer red raw faster, into quicktimes or what have you.

+1 .

It's already been done long ago. Iridas, in the early days of the camera, did it without Red's consent and had to disable it, but it worked even from a reverse engineered method.

CUDA and OpenCL are pretty robust and well developed now, with debayering tasks from Arriraw and Sony F55 being performed regularly on GPU, and I imagine it's not too huge of a task to port the SDK for either of those two.

I think it's high time to get off of proprietary hardware for post production. Post is still the no. 1 argument against shooting Red that I hear from producers, directors, & dps, even ones that are completely in love with the images. And requiring $10k worth of proprietary hardware taking up two valuable PCI slots to debayer 5k in realtime is a bit much, IMHO.

assuming your not shooting off speed, couldn't you guys use a pix240 or equivalent for really cheap to get you that pro res in real time?

a cheap red rocket is not the answer to a good red workflow, it's red getting out of the card business all together and opening up the floor to the ones who do it well, do it! The Red Rocket card is a bottle neck that will hurt full integration with red. The main reason is Avid, Avid is "the" professional tool for features, not Premiere or FCPx. We won't see rocket integration within Avid. The fact we have to use four year old chip technology to drive the image of the future is bad. It's much like me trading in my massive Mac Pro and replacing it with a mac mini and have it render 4 times faster. Leave the cards to Black Magic, Aja and Matrox and focus on cameras. That way the card manufactures can stay on top and gives up the best for cheapest, and we don't have to pay 4k for a card that cost half that from it's developer.

I'm sure that BM can make a line of card to suite our price point and deliver awesome power.

With the speeds of Thunderbolt and chip technology today, there is no reason why we are not running 4k realtime.

Not to trample this point, but one RED Rocket for 5K full-resolution, real-time playback is absolutely possible. We're doing that right now in our 2012 5,1 Mac Pro's.

In general I have to disagree from the points here. CUDA 1.2x-3x rendering improvements don't hold a candle to what we get out of a single RED Rocket card. I'd hate to see RED debayering put into the hands of AMD and nVIDIA. I prefer the RED solution. I'd love to see a faster RED Rocket and cheaper price is always better, but please keep this on a dedicated card. RED can manage things much better this way.

..not sure id trust that realtime downsampling..then again people seem happy with the Alexa Ds..

you're totally right. Make a plugin redrocket with thunderbolt and USB 3, for mac and PC for something around $1000 and everybody would buy it! you guys just made the redray for something like $1400. So a plug and play mini redrocket should be do-able also i might think, put a cardreader in it aswell and i'm happy :)

I know this is heresy, but I'm using a PIX240 to record prores and foregoing the entire redcode workflow except for select shots; between the expensive REDMag media and a $5K proprietary card and extra workflow time, it makes more sense to me (at my level) to record "online" to the PIX240 while also taking advantage of the PIX's clean audio.

I would love to change my point of view: I think RED would sell a lot more REDMag media if the media were a bit less expensive and, indeed, if there were a $1K-$3K Thunderbolt hardware debayer box, with extra bonus points if it included a REDMag reader.
