  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Footage editing on a Mac Book Pro?

Don't use a macbook pro, there are better options on the PC market...
...The mobile rocket is not a price efficient solution. You can get a monster laptop for the same price doing stuff almost a easy a with the rocket.

I don't doubt PC laptop solutions are valid for editing, but the mobile rocket is the only way to significantly speed up mobile transcodes from R3D files is it not?

so how much faster will the render times be, if i use a mobile rocket?

were can i buy, that mobile rocket? and how much is it ?

You can expect render times of about 3:1 meaning a minute of R3D would take 3 minutes to render (as opposed to 45 minutes without Rocket and I'm not kidding)... Literally, an hour of footage will take 3 hours to render as opposed to 2 days without Red Rocket... Again, it's all about patience and scheduling your work properly, but I recommend a Rocket card if you can afford it...

You can buy the Rocket card directly from Red HERE (brand new 4750$ / recycled 3000$) and get the Mobile Rocket casing from MAXX Digital HERE (1099$ empty / 5849$ with Rocket card included I think), or get the Mobile Rocket with the Rocket card pre-installed from MAXX Digital as well...

Depends on what hardware there is inside your computer, but with improving CUDA support, I'm really not that sure Rocket is worth it's price. As for today it is, it's really good, but I don't think it's THAT good.

Only set back I have is the disk speed, but you have more options there as well with Esata ports and USB3, to which you can do an external RAID.

Premiere can use 4K. Edit proxies or native R3Ds.

For heavy on-set work I see no reason to use macbook pros, they are far too slow and limited. If you want a mac on set and do this kind of editing, the most expensive Mac Pro would be the option. Then again, with a little patience, the HP 8370w Elitebook is powerful enough for most heavy work. It also has a dreamcolor display as it's laptop display which is enough for a good grade.

I can't vouch for PC editing or Data management as I don't use them, but I'm sure they fairly do just as well... I don't know if the Red Rocket works with PC either, maybe it does...

BUT, I don't see how you can accelerate render times significantly without a Red Rocket, either on PC or Mac based computer, even on a "monster laptop"... It will maybe have a +/- 10% difference due to processor or hardware card (?) performance, but nothing anywhere close to the speed of a Rocket card...

For now it's 15 times better, and even more with the new Neyhalem processors of the new Macs...

All I can say, is when you have done without Rocket for a LONG time, knowing the sometimes frustration of the render times when you are in a hurry or just plain eager, the Rocket suddenly seems like heaven and you wonder how you could live without...

I promise, it's REALLY fast! And I think it will remain MUCH better than without for a very long time still...

For delivery of transcoded files to edit, CUDA does not accelerate that I believe.

Tanks Lewis, your very helpful, i would love to see how it really works in real life, a personal presentation would be awesome, but your far away :emote_22_yikes:

Are you editing with FCP or with something else?

This whole thread also makes me want to state the following:

As a rule of thumb, it's true that a tower based Mac Pro will always have more HP under the hood, giving you extra comfort in editing and whatever else in general, but you will get as much good results and quality with a MacBook Pro. Never underestimate it's reliability, versatility and power just because it's a laptop.

Besides comfort (more Ram) and Chip power, there's no real difference, plus you can move it more easily...

Good Day!
Lewis you made my day. We do everything here on the latest loaded macs and we do have rocket but I do most of my drafts on a loaded mac book pro so we have been wondering if there is a rocket solution for same. The order goes in today!
Have a good one!
