After lots of money saving and plenty of camera rentals prior to my purchase, I have just managed to save enough money to justify buying my first RED ( an EPIC M - #02107) that was delivered to me 2 weeks ago. I had the chance to close inspect my Camera tonight in good lighting conditions and was really surprised at the poor finishing quality of some parts ofmy camera... As you know, I have payed 5k extra for the title of epic M.. So that my camera would have been hand built and hand inspected ! Bellow are a few pictures that show old/ used bolts screwed to my camera body and a little dent on the bottom!

Is that the quality that I should expect when receiving a brand new camera from RED? is it supposed to be tough enough that screws/bolts and dents like this are unchecked? I am on the upgrade list for the dragon and am worried about my brand new camera ( was it really brand new??) What should i expect when i pay extra 10k for a sensor upgrade and have to send it in? should I send it in now to have it checked or should I wait for the upgrade call and get it checked then ??

Anything that could be done about it? What do you guys
recommend ?

Don't wanna sound like a jerk over here, but was expecting top notch quality inspection before my 30k camera was sent out to me.

that does not look like a tooling mark, it looks like a dent....and he is right , the bolts look stripped....none of mine look like that, never did, not on my scarlet and not on my epic....not even after i actually used them....
i would take better pics and talk to your rep.....

My m looked great... Very high quality IMO.

Start with sending RED better quality photos so they can see what's up. We can not do anything for you.

Everything I have every received from RED was good fit and finish.

Oh and . . . what's up with using black text on a dark grey background?

orlando, yes, hard to tell from photos on both issues. Nick will reach out to you for further assistance....

I myself own an Epic X, but on those occasions I managed to get my hands on the M models they were all superbly finished. In fact, some of us consider the M as a work of art.

Hey Zeb...Don't know what happened with the background! sorry about that! that was really weird! About the bolt.....I just noticed it by turning the camera upside down....it looks as if the bolts are sort of Rusty.....sort of Worn.....and that really got my attention! Not very Happy just receiving a Brand new Epic M on the Mail and seeing this.....Im afraid that maybe it was an used system that got mixed up by mistake somehow...

thank you Brent! Lets just hope it was a problem with the bolts and nothing more.....will try to bet better quality pictures if needed ( took those with an iPhone ) As I said....my main concern is having bought a camera that maybe was mixed up with an used one on the way out....I don't know if the serial number can say much....but will definitely hope to get an answer from my bomb squad rep by tomorrow on how to deal with a situation like this.

For your information Orlando... here's my year old Epic M, I'm always looking for an excuse to take pictures of it, I think it's pretty. :-). Click on them for D800 resolution pics.

Id be pissed if that happened to me. I'm sure they will make it right but makes me wonder what's going on up there.

When we hear about another dead on arrival brain, power system or mag etc I`m sure we all roll our eyes and hope it doesnt happen to us, but to not simply visually inspect a product that is marketed and sold based on its high build quality is ASTONISHING!

Q.C. department seems to be having a bad 2013 and 2014. Someone will be looking for a new job.
