If you have had a chance to hold or view a running Epic prototype, what was the fan noise like? I have always been a little concerned about the fan noise level for the Epic (Ultra small body+lots of electronics+small high RPM fans=high temps/noise). I like to shoot close to actors and I am concerned that the fan noise will be picked up in the audio. I have seen people put icepacks on R1's but I hope we don't have to do this with the Epic. I'm sure that Red has it all figured but what db levels do you think we can expect when recording?

What nathan said, the R1 is silent during recording as well... if you have the correct settings

a 5d also doesn't have to cool a 4k sensor while processing raw. 24 times a second

That's not quite the point... I've used the 5D example to tell what "no noise" is. But yes If you shoot nascar or helicopter there will be no noise problem. It happen I've shot different scene where I was 1 meter from main character in a bathroom and the sound guy wanted to :emote_headwall:

well yes, by silent, I mean by, unless you're shooting cats purring in closeup, the fan noise isn't going to destroy the shot, may require a little sound mixing.

A 5d still overheats and shuts down without warning after 12 minutes flat while shooting video.

Also, in long takes, I have heard that the fans can crank up in the middle of a scene if you are recording 10+ minutes. Is this true?

As much as I love the small size of the Epic, I can still not help but worry about overheating and fan noise. Anyone ever used some kind of sound barney for the R1?

I'd suggest, at least concerning with the RED one, that you should shoot with one before you "hear rumors" about the fan starting up during a long take

From my extensive shooting with it, I've never had the fan turn on during a take. But then again, I've had no extended takes, so I can't speak about 15+ min takes

Scratch this one up to internet rumor, neither RED ONE or EPIC fans "turn on" during a take...

On RED ONE I have recorded for well over 1 hour to RED DRIVE with fans still in "quiet" mode.

It's not the overheating which causes a problem. It's the FAT32 filesystem format that the DSLR's record to which limits file sizes to 4GB. One of many limitations...and reasons why I don't own a DSLR.

I'm with Stuart on this. I'm DITing on a feature right now and we are doing long ass takes and the fan does NOT turn on. When camera cuts the fan turns on.

Had my camera since Feb 08 and this has never been a problem.

No, it is not true. (That would be an idiotic way to design a camera.) I routinely record long interviews on R1 with no overheating or sound issues.

R1 is quieter when recording than my Arri 16SR2, and most of the 35BL cameras I have used, so no barney has ever been necessary. Further, putting a R1 inside something like a barney would aggravate any heat problem. Not really a good idea.

Nope, nope, nope and nope. In quiet mode the fans shut the hell up as soon as you hit the red button and then whir back to life when you stop recording. If the soundo likes to get the after-take chit-chat then they might have a bit of a whinge but if they want to get the actual takes, no problem.
