hi guys,

last week i was shooting in scotland and the problem was my epic is constantly booting in firmware upgrade and the only option is to shutdown. unfortunately i had only the sidehandle and redvolt's, this is annoying... after I returned from scotland I have unmount the sidehandle and power with AC this works fine. i have checked the contacts on the camera and the pogo-pins on the side-handle, both looks good and nothing is broken.

problem specified:

- i turn the cam on and then goes automatically to update the attached peripherials (sidehandle) and the only option is to shutdown the camera.
- the side handle's display is not turning on, only the backlight works on display and the funcions are all okay.
- when powering with sidehandle the batterie-state is showing much later on the red-lcd-display

this is what i have try:
- roll back to previous firmware (not works)
- new firmware (not works)
- reset to factory-settings (not works)
- cleaned the contacts on the red and the sidehandle (not works)

currently I'm trying it to fix it through the RED Support, they are very fast in answering and hard working on this issue, THX RED for the great support. but they want to send in the whole camera... you know the problem, sending the camera from switzerland is really really extremely expensive. and it is also in use in the coming months I can hardly do without it :(...

so I thought maybe someone knows the problem on reduser or have any ideas or recommendations?

Many thanks for your efforts
best regards
Sergio

Could you try another side-handle (borrow or go to a rental house and ask)? That would be the quickest way to find out if it's the sidehandle or the camera.

hello Sergio ..
I had the same problems and then one day you do not 'more turned on and' remained with black screen and fan running.
I sent in RED with FedEx, calculated about 15 days between delivery and repair from Switzerland.
The cost is around $ 1000.

try hard reset button:

push hold for 20-30 second power button until you hear the fans fast, then relaise.

Could you try another side-handle (borrow or go to a rental house and ask)? That would be the quickest way to find out if it's the sidehandle or the camera.

it's what I wanted to make at the begining, unfortunately at the moment no side-handles are quickly available around my location for testing it...

Could you try to remove the Side SSD module too?

thx again for the tip.
I have try this, but unfortunately without success, additional I have done a reset and tested other things without the SSD Module. It only works without the Side-handle...

hi luigi, i have try this several times, unfortunately without success... thanks for the information about sending in the cam and what I have to expect about the costs.

is really annoying the camera is practically new (1 month - approx. 30h runtime - 3 shootings)
I am in contact with my Rep. let's see what comes out, 'll post here for other who also have this problem...

Okay Guys ;) my lovely Red Epic is back, yupidoo.

the technicians confirmed my reported issue that the RTC battery was so low that date/time reset to default after reboot. They needed to replace the RTC battery in order to fix the issue.
They also confirmed the issue with the DSMC Side Handle and needed to replace an internal key component.

the camera went through Red's quality control testing and is now functioning within specification.

I'm soooo happy that she runs like new.
Thank you RED! you have a really brilliant support team & service, thanks a lot!

in spite of the problems during shooting there is my scotland short-trip movie:

Hi Sergio,
I've just started to experience the same problems that you encountered with my scarlet. It was the second last setup of a two day shoot when the problem began.
Excuse my ignorance - but what is the RTC battery? Is that part of the camera, or side handle? By your response it seems as though there were 2 problems that Red have now fixed. I live in Sydney, so like you the idea of sending the camera to Red is not a great, given the time and cost associated.
Thanks,

Myles.
