  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED EPIC 007 @ 192 fps test

David,

I'm waiting that Compressor finish decoding one huge 20GB file and that will take about 5-6 hours more or less.

Then I would be able to restart computer to finish upload of that ProRes file.

If you could a bit wait that then all be OK later...

These desktop render times kill me. I guess it's time for a render farm.

I've used Twixtor for a while and can manage to get minimum warping with a few clicks. Nothing really special going on though.

Any chance you might be willing to discuss those few clicks? I just got Twixtor and am interested in trying this out on some of my MX shots. If not, I understand.

giving Twixtor motion references with some basic masking/roto will help significantly in reducing warping or optical flow issues.
other than that you really need to play with the settings, there's no perfect recipe for any shot really.

Also good contrast between edges will help a lot.

Thanks Mark! I graded in RC-X, exported a 2.5K DPX to AE and did some magic.

Twixtor tends to work better when there is more detail in the shot.

Yeah - I was wondering if you had to go to 4K/5K frames for that quality - pretty damn good for "just 2.5K" - LOL!!

I'm going to shoot some pyrotechnics tests soon - so - it will be cool to see the quality of slowing that down in post from a 120fps or 96fps using 4K or 5K frames -

twixtor for Epic-S

twixtor for Epic-S

Great slow-mo Justin, very smooth. What do you guys think about the viability of using twixtor (or any other retimmer) to slow down Epic-S footage? Given Epic-S will be half the frame rates of Epic-X, you'll only need to slow to 50%, and you have an Epic-X frame rates. At only 50%, I'd imagine it'll handle a good amount of shots with little or no artifacts.

This has heavily affected my decision to switch to Epic-S. Any thoughts?

Zhibo Lai,

could be but nobody can tell you until we test EPIC-S slowed down footage and compare to the original EPIC-X clip at the same fps...(120 fps or...)...

I would love to have that footage. I can make it look super pretty :)

Justin...that looks great and one of the few times I have seen some really good Twixtor'd super slo-mo stuff where the action was in front of something other than a complete limbo background (empty sky, etc). Tearing (warping?) where the forground action reveals detail that the app has to interpolate in the BG is what seems to kills it. Admittably, I haven't looked into it very deeply, but got turned off with a few clips that I have downloaded. I remember one shot of a close up of a runners foot...the heel, as it lifted up, "tore" or stretched the grass it was revealing, looking like it was kind of "stuck" to some green rubber...it looked horrible. I've heard there are ways to minimise these artifacts, but again, haven't looked into it very much. Your example is with a shot with very shallow DOF...which works way better than if there was exteme detail in the BG...and speculating here...may work better than if the action was moving faster (less slo-mo effect) where tearing may be more evident?

Tom...glad that you are looking in to it and something we can toss around next week over dinner. I too would like to hear about Justin's secret sauce.

Larry
