The purpose of this forum is to connect the Red user community to exchange information
for the greater common good. That is a good thing for us all and Reduser is an amazing tool for that.

However every email that we as customers/users get from anybody working at Red has a
disclaimer that this is 'privileged' information that cannot be shared. And Red employees actually
point that out and/or take down posts with that kind of information.

Possible legal technicalities are not my issue here. And I do understand to a certain degree
that Red employees do not want to have everything they write in an email reposted on a public forum.

However there must be a way to share technical information amongst us Red Camera Users, even
if that might sometimes not in the best interest of Red Digital, for example if one of their products might
have production flaws etc.

Any ideas how to best solve this conundrum ? Dear Red Team please feel free to weigh in.

cheers

axel

I suspect a message board owned and controlled by the company in question would NOT be that place.

They have stated in the past that people are free to open up their own boards and many have. It is unfortunate that there is not a single definitive "outside" source but how do you solve that?

Simple.. just ask your rep if you can post what he just told you... :)

My strong point on this is "PRIVATE" must be taken seriously!!

If and when those times came that I really wanted to post emailed info from RED or any one for that matter, I have asked permission to do so, prior to,
and only posted after I got the answer, it should not be done in any other way!!

Edit, he he, Jarred bit me to it... ;)

Oh wait, actually we posted at the asme exact time he he.

But yeah, please don't post any one's email answer publicly, it would make me unhappy, and so I imagine any one else.

As a matter of courtesy I agree with Ketch and Jarred perfectly, just ask if you can share before doing so.

It's what I expect from ANY email conversation.

As a matter of legality ...

Unless there is a signed and executed NDA or the matter is otherwise subject to a legal privilege (husband-wife, attorney-client, doctor-patient or a government secrecy act) then legally anything in an email can be used in any way at the discretion of the recipient and the sender has no legal recourse.

The wise course? Always write emails like they might be published or appear in a court.

If that isn't enough, use encryption to sign or encode your message, which usually strengthens privacy/secrecy claims and proves due diligence and the expectation of direct private communication.

I'm not a lawyer, so this isn't legal advice.

As far as things go in the Complaint Department...

Very rarely do you see things go so badly like they did today. Yes, you will see someone very upset post. Sometimes it's rude, sometimes it's civilized. I haven't been keeping stats but most of the time someone from Red addresses the complaint fairly quickly and things are handled between Red and the person through email. Usually the original complainer will post that things have been resolved. The threads aren't deleted or closed.

You are right Brad.. usually it is good. . I wouldn't of made a complaint department if I didn't want people to have a place to complain :)

Just remember.. sometimes there is a lot of stuff that happens behind the posts that you don't see.. sometimes some bad stuff.. and thats when things can go nuclear.

Well, in the interests of being nosey... since that fella posted Brent's emails, I say: disclose the other side of the story ;-)

I've actually talked to a lot of lawyers who have said we are probably less than 5 years out from a case like this going to SCOTUS to decide the validity of these sorts of disclaimers in an e-mail, mainly because you can't consent to the terms of the transmission prior to actually reading the e-mail. As a SCOTUS ruling junkie, I look forward to seeing how it plays. My guess is that were a case to hit to court TODAY, it'd be 5-4 in favor of legitimizing such disclaimers as SCOTUS right now is pretty heavily on the side of businesses and these sorts of things protect businesses from employees doing potentially damaging things via e-mail. Who knows what will happen if we have more changes in the court make-up in the not too distant future?

I will say this, regardless of the legal legitimacy, I find it in incredibly poor taste to repost information that was obviously intended to be private. It certainly rises to the level of having a bad attitude :p

Like Jarred said, common sense and courtesy can go a long way and all you need to do is ask :)
