  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED economy

I liked it a lot.
I think in periods of crisis people need and deserve more emotions than before.

Gunleik, I just want to add something to your very interesting rational there. I am a photographer, I help on a rental house here in Colombia. As of last year, there were no rental houses that could rent me a digital medium format camera for my work. Now there is one, people dont realize the greatness of having a rental house for equipment you might want to use until there is no one to rent it from. My thought on this matter? Rental houses opened so many doors to red you couldnt imagine. When there where none, one could rent from different places with different optics and try it. You could decide whether it could be proper for your project or not. And I think that is awesome. Now today, you can get away with a red rental for 250, so be it. It takes more than the camera to make a great image, you, jim, I said that, we know that. But we have to make a living too, your thoughts are shared on this side of the world, I just thought we ought the rental business the chance to rent lights for our cameras, rent glass for our cameras, network for people who know the knowhows, and a lot more. And today as I read the forums there seems to be an anger towards those who complain about the prices on the business on the RED rentals. And I dont think thats right. They should read your post and think again, everyone has the right to be worried. I am not, my camera hasnt paid of its ROI yet, and I have had it for a long time now. It has surely produced some astonishing images, and thats just what I bought it for. Good enough for me. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Esteban. I actually both hope and think the rental business will survive. We all need it. If we were all to sit on all gear for all occations... That'd be... well... really bad.

But at the moment, business is so slow, that I think a lot of the current ones will basically kill themselves off by renting to any cost. Noone can survive that in the long run AND keep competent technicians AND offer the proper services AND keep their gear in good shape.

So my guess, is that we will see new businesses with a less credit-based businessmodel grow, prosper and expand over the next couple of years.

Just my 2c, though and not the main point of the blogspot...

Thanks Esteban!

In a few paragraphs the story changes...
"Optics have been rare for a year and a half, if you’ve been looking. But now. It’s not cheap yet, but still. "
Then...
"The price of optics will skyrocket if RED cannot deliver the promised prime-set in due time, when the demand becomes thousands of sets a year in a market that is used to hundreds."

Are they going up or down?

Hi.

The one: "Skyrocket if RED doesn't cough up PL lenses of sufficient quantities and quality", was what I discussed with my businesspartner back in 2006.

The other: "Accessible and comming down", is the current status.

Cheers

The blog is about the R1 but it speaks volumes about what i've said to people about other issues. This blog touched on it also but always referred back to the RED.

EVERY BODY AND THEIR MOM THINKS THEY ARE A DIRECTOR.

This logic is what i'm talking about.

but sadly some may think that i fall into the same category. the reason that I even bring this up is that in my short journey as a Director. I have met so many talented people waste their energy trying to direct when they are such good editors..producers etc. From what i've noticed alot of people do it for the recognition(aka fame) or money. If everybody just stuck to what their good at (whether it be editing, graphics, camera op.) at there would be alot more good "product" on the market. Better story telling. better stories. I have been one of the guys stuck trying to do it by himself because everyone else is trying to direct their own stuff (by themselves).

All this logic is making kids go out and buy the RED. they talk investors into thinking they are the next best thing. when all they are doing is flooding the market and leaving less work out there for people that want to tell stories for the sake of entertainment, not just money. and are good or better at it.

the tools have always been available. so if they can't tell a story with an HVX the RED ain't gonna save anyone, even if it is more affordable than film.

i still think there are no bad directors just directors with different styles. but you either got it or you don't.

my two cents

I think you're fools if your Directors and you go and buy the camera.

Leave the cameras to the photographers (or at least have the experience of one).

That's what's flooding the market.

My 2 cents

the way i approached my career is going through the camera dept first. Dolly grip, 2nd AC, 1st AC, Camera Op. But like I said I hire Cinematographers who own a RED and know how to use it. Its a TEAM effort to make something really shine. If it wasn't for good cinematographers some directors work would be poop.

I think it's even easier:
If you need a cam and can put it to good use and can - or have people who can understand the workflow: go buy

If you think RED is the golden ticket to "get started", you're way off.

You could be a dop, a rental business, an fx house or a producer and there would be lots of good reasons to buy.

but if you think red is getting you into any of those professions, you may be in for a bumpy ride...

... and also, because of RED, a lot has changed for those in the market. It is now more of a hassle NOT to have a camera, than it is an advantage to have one - given the above.

if you want to make your own films owning is better than renting. I'm not sorry so many red's are in the market. its a great camera. will it make stories better no way , will it make the image better yes but your composition and lots of other factors could still suck.

when scarlet gets released its going to be even harder if you were banking on red being a rental business. we'll have lots of films made. true the stories and acting will still suck, but they'll look a little prettier. the more popular red gets the better it will be for all of us. specially for post tools
