  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red Drives not showing up on R1

Sounds like something that's happened to us. One time it was the drive cable (unlikely in your case, since you've tried two); the other time it was the R1 SATA controller. If you check with your Bomb Squad rep, he/she might be able to get someone to analyze log files and diagnose the problem.

This happened to my BT RED MX as well. Red didnt give me a straight answer as to what needed to be replaced internally but I'm 99.9% sure it was the R1 SATA controller too as Ben suggested to me in person when I was looking for answers. RED should get it fixed for you in under a weeks time, but it isnt covered under the 90 day warranty at this point.

Best,
AJ

Can you hear the drive spin up when it's connected to the camera? If not the Lemo on the drive may have come loose from the circuit board. If you open up the drive you'll see the connector is wired to a small daughter board that connects to another board by a plastic header. Make sure that is seated firmly and is level. On first drive I had the connecter had lifted by barely a millimeter at the left edge, but that was enough - pushed it back into place and it worked fine.

Yes, you can here it spin away, But thanks

That I will look in to Thanx

As mentioned, try formatting in FAT32 on computer.

If the drives won't show up on the camera to allow you to format, try waiting until the camera is booted, then hook up the drive.

try a new or another drive cable.
best wishes and kind regards,
martin

I know the odds are slim that you have 2 defective drive cables, but to be honest it was the single most likely thing to be damaged when we were renting out or shooting with our R1s.

People can line them up wrong and bend the pins quite easily.

If you know somewhere locally that has R1s that you can go and test with their cables, it might clear this up, and better than sending your camera away unnecessarily

Thanks for all the suggestions. Had everything tested and it looks like the problem lies in the Camera. Also my Side record button doesn't work either and this is one of the battle tested R1's and this is my first time using it. Think they will extend my 90 day warranty?

No harm in asking nicely - send in all the suspect cables and drives too, so they can eliminate all the possibilities.

All cables and drives worked fine when tested on the other R1's, just not on mine but thanks for the heads up.

In that case, only send them in if Red asks you to, after discussing your problem.

Update. Finally got my Camera back for Red. Drives were never the problem. Technicians de termined that an internal board component needed
to be repaired. Now Drive work Great.

Hey Roger,

Great to hear that RED was able to fix your camera for you. Happy shooting!

Bought two red drives hooded them up to my R1mx and my R1 won't see them. Tested the drives on my computer and they worked fine. Please help.

The first thing you must know, is to NOT delete data or format the drives while they are hooked up to your computer.

You need to format the drives WHILE they are connected to the camera, then all should work well. To remove the data, re-format after you've re-connected it to the camera. Then you can shoot again with only "new" footage in the drive.

If none of this works, you may have to send the drives to Red for formatting. When you get them back, immediately "re-format" them in YOUR camera.

This is slightly incorrect. There is absolutely no harm in deleting data or formatting the Red Drives when connected to a computer (as long as that data isn't important of course!). In fact that can be one way of getting Red Drives to work again if the camera is having problems with recognising the drives or in formatting them.

It is correct that the the Red Drives have to then be reformatted by the camera before using them on the camera though.
