The drive is 640GB RAID 0; two 320GB drives. There's probably still quite a few old 2 x 160GB units floating around.

Now all the SSD stuff is very cool, and supports much higher data rates, but it strikes me the old drive could still be a much more useful device in certain specific situations - if it was much bigger, and had perhaps a pair of 1TB drives in it...

Now I think I remember reading that there was some custom firmware involved, and replacing or upgrading these drives was not a straightforward procedure. But has anyone tried it, with any success?

If a third-party company came up with re-engineered 2TB RED DRIVEs, or offered an upgrade service, would anyone be interested? I'm guessing RED have gone all excited about SSDs and any such project would be of little interest. Custom firmware is a 'granny stopper', not a roadblock, to an old hacker like me... ;-)

I'd guess there's nothing to stop you trying, but obviously Red has not sanctioned this and so it would be entirely at your own risk (and your production clients).

I'd love to be allowed to keep mine working if they died, for Red One cameras or even Epic at 4K resolutions or lower - I do make use of long recording times occasionally.

At worst Red will repair it for a fee. We treasure our drives.

Oh I'm sure they would, and do it well. I'm more interested in making an upgrade work. I'm an old hacker; there's nothing I own I don't try to make faster, better, or smarter :Angel_anim:

Would you treasure a 2TB drive even more if it was as good as the original RED?
