Since I got the camera Ive been recording mainly with cf cards. The past week I started using the red drive and at least 3 times the camera shut down either after or during formatting the drive and another one in idle mode. Im using build 13, shooting in 4k 2:1, batteries(yes, they were charged) and 2 drives, so its either the camera, the build, or the cable(havent tried the second cable yet). Any thoughts?

check your power cable

check your power cable

try running the red and drive with the cam's ac power supply. your cradle's battery power cable might be intermittent. you might also want to experiment with the included red drive ac power transformer. the drives might be requiring too much battery power so you can supplement power needs with ac adapter. doesn't solve your problem but the more troubleshooting you can do before red tech support gets involved, the faster you'll get a fix.

my power cable is bad...if I bump the camera even a small amount it will shut down

I finished a shoot about two week ago. Half the time we used the CF cards. The other half was with the raid drives. Raid drives were used for both locked off shots, hand held stuff, and even a bit of steadicam work. No problems.

Then I did a shoot where we started off with CF because the DP wanted to check to make sure everything was working okay. Once he got comfortable, we switched to the raid and shot about 20 minutes worth of footage. Went to lunch and then switched to hand held work. We'd place the camera on his shoulders, pressed the record button and the camera just froze. Nothing. Powered down and booted up. Tried this twice and froze twice. Switched to CF and finished the day with no problems.

I haven't tested the raids lately as the last job was too big to risk anything and we stayed completely on CF cards so that we can check and verify our footage as we went along.

I'm going to put the raids thorough their paces in the coming weeks to make sure they will work for paid shoots. When the Raid was working, it was great not to have to download footage so often.

What was the status of the footage shot on the raids?

Would you mind posting the specs of your camera in the future. Beta builds over Release builds are pretty important information for a lot of people.

Thank you for the story, I am waiting to hear how it pans out.

Red Raid Camera Freeze

Red Raid Camera Freeze

We shot about 5 minutes on the raid with build 13 and had no problems until
we tried playing back in camera. On playback the camera froze, said initializing, powered down and back up
So we called Red Tech Support and they suggested upgrading to Build 15 and reformat Raid Drive.

We installed build 15 using Raid drive, and recorded, played back fine for the first couple shots. Then had the same problem as ptran again in regards to the camera freezing, powering down and powering back up. It did so three time in a row and now is stuck on boot up. The LCD monitor is two shades of blue with a little box in the middle and the back LCD is stuck on "Booting..."

Camera will not power down now, even when I push the power on/off button.
I guess the only option is to pull the battery cable.

Any help?

Had this happen exactly like this a week ago. Pulled the power, let it sit for a minute, and then powered up again with no problems.
