Anyone know the specs on the red drive power adapter? We didn't get one with the drive and need to dump footage. Wondering if we could use the lacie power adapter.

Someone mentioned bus powered too, which should I use if we have to?

Thanks
Spike

Bus power from firewire 400 or firewire 800 is no issue, just plug it in, give it some time and it'll come up on the desktop - most people only ever use the power adaptor if the firewire ports fail to give power.

Much safer than plugging in something potentially incompatible when you've got rushes on there...

Red don't recommend using it without a power adaptor. I think this has led to many blown FW800 ports as a result.

This is a dumb question, but does anyone have a picture of the Red drive power adapter? I've been using bus power, but I recently read that using the power adapter is better. I have a bunch of adapters, but I'm trying to figure out which ones are for the Red drives :001_unsure:

That's why I put a label on it.

Here's its sticker. Hope this helps...

Much safer to use external power. Firwire 400 is particularly prone to burn out - even plugging it in at a slightly off angle is enough. Some people use a special adapter for firewire cables that do not pass any power (me included).

Has RED every made an official statement to not use bus power? I haven't seen one.

No, because it is not a "RED-DRIVE" issue, but a drive issue, in general. It is a best practice to power from AC rather than via Firewire. Let that cable run data only, instead of data AND power. If we did not "recommend" that best practice, we would not include the power adaptor in the first place, haha.

Obviously be careful about polarity - centre positive!

Hi, first time using the RED. We didn't get the adapter either, but we got a replacement with the same ac requirements. However, whenever we plug the Red Drive and our Backup Hard drive in the same computer, we get a "Device Removal" error because clearly its not running enough power for both drives. In another post, they said it was cause somebody was dumping files through the F800 with no adapter, but we got an adapter and I can hear the RED drive spin whenever we connect it to it. Anyone have any suggestions?

Is your Backup Hard Drive by any chance another Red Drive? You can't run two RED Drives on Firewire - one of them always unmounts! A non-RED Drive hard drive should be OK. Or try running one of them on the USB bus - slower of course, but will eliminate the drive as the cause.
