  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I guess I already know the answer to this one but I thought I'd ask anyway. ;)
My drive was finally shipped today (thanks BrianB!) and we are doing this shoot at short notice.
How about Red Ram - worth trying to find one?
We'll need to be able to run longer takes and shooting CF cards will slow us down considerably.

Do G forces affect the drive as much as the vibrations?
This sort of movement: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DsJxZDdJwE8
We'll be doing some moderately fast tarmac driving - not racing.

Cheers!

Milan

Based on the demo, that's a bit fast. Slightly slower movement would be okay. I use the drive on a seven jib all the time and have never had a dropped frame, no matter what movement I do.

Worth a test, and if you're getting dropped frames maybe try 16GB cards. 8-10 minutes in a take enough?

Wow! That's neck-snapping. Yeah, definitely CF or RED RAM.
Nice arm, though.

If you can get by with 3K, that will extend the record time on your CF cards. But, yeah, that movement is a bit wild for a hdd.

Gyro stabilized?

Gyro stabilized?

AFAIK the Arm is extremely well stabilized to take out all jarring motion (the whole purpose for it's design)- it's the best there is(arguably) There should be no problem using drives- hand-held is more demanding on the drive IMO.

Well, that's what I was thinking, vibrations shouldn't be a problem. I was just wondering about the G forces. I may test it and see how it goes but I will rent Red Ram anyways.

Thanks again!

From my experiences using motion controlled rig the acceleration of this magnitude will cause drop frames, not just vibrations.

Also, I'm not sure if the arm transfers micro-vibrations from stepper motors. These also cause dropped frames.

Anyway, give it a try and let us know. :biggrin5:

Performace Filmworks- the owner of Ultimate arm has been using my recording monitors that record on hard drives for years( http://optitek.org/optiview.php) I only replaced HD once or twice. And that was due to the age of these drives.
Granted- since these are monitoring devices no one cares much about dropped frames- but we realy did not see any to speak of... Also the monitors are placed inside the car and there are a lot more G-forces there especially on offroad jobs..

Yep, if the gyros work properly, it should be silk smoooooth. HD work fine. .. but CF is safer :)
