I have a Red drive that will play all clips back except the first one on camera, but comes with "problem with drive do you want to initialise" when connected to firewire 800

Any suggestions I need to get the clips off for a project

Have you plugged in the external power to the red drive?

Have you tried different cables, i.e. another FW800 cable, fw400, USB?

Have you tried it on a different computer?

Have you tried restarting the computer?

Are you on a Mac or windows machine?

Whatever you do, do not click on "initialize!"

Definitely plug in external power supply FIRST.

Then try the FW400 port.

Then try the USB port.

Sometimes, you have to wait a minute or two for the drive to show up on the desktop, especially if it is having problems.

I hope this helps!..

Running 8 core mac,I have done all the above except trying a windows machine. Will give it a try thanks

Just a quick thought: you know that you can't have two RED drives connected to the same computer at the same time? Sometimes I get panicked calls from fellow DITs and the only thing that's wrong is they are attempting to connect more than one drive.

Actually, I have noticed that sometimes the drive only mounts when I plug the USB or FW cable first, and the power supply a few seconds later.

I know this sounds crazy, but I have been able to verify this dozens of times on at least 2 different drives and 2 different computers (PC and Mac), so this really works. Every time a drive doesn't mount, I try this method and it works.

I agree with you, Nils. We faced the same issue a few times. Only once all the footage was lost because of the hard drive was physically damaged inside, then we have no solution to deal with it. But it was rarely happened. Generally, my workflow is:

1. Plug the Hard Drive power first (it do helps the finder finds out the drive quickly)
2.Try Firewire 800, 400 or USB (usually USB won't help on MAC,but on PC is fine)
3.If both Mac and Pc don't work either, go back to MAC, try 'READUNDEAD'

I have to say 'redundead' is really cool and powerful, but use it at the last minute, it do takes times. SO for using READUNDEAD:
1. check the disk utility, see if the RED drive is there,if it's there, use READUNDEAD to find out the R3Ds.
2.If the Red drive is showed up in disk utility, but the READUNDEAD doesn't work, try to format the drive once(only format, not erase data!!!). Most of time, after formatting, the drive will show up on the desktop. Then use READUNDEAD again.
3.If the Red drive is not showed up in disk utility, then format the Red drive on your Red One, then use Redundead to recover everything. Only format, not re-write.

If you do everything, and the Red Drive is still not showed up, the drive maybe damage. Then you have to send the drive back to RED USA.

My personal workflow, hope it can help.

if the usb and fw400 interface do work, but not the fw800,
try adding a Lexar FW800 reader in the chain between the computer.
we have the first generation REDDrives and with the newer Macbookpro's
its necessary to use this trick. The older macbookpro generation
doesnt have this problem.

Paul,

if all else fails. And i mean all. You can format the drive on camera. DO NOT RECORD! Then the drive should mount and you can use Redundead. I have done this after My bomb squad told me to. If you can't see the drive after formatting on camera, send it to Red. Make sure not to write anything to the drive.

I had a problem where the drive would not mount on Mac, but worked fine on Windows. Worked fine on Mac next time we formated, but that one time had to use Windows to download.

Windows worked and I got all the files off and safe
good result

Thanks all. Paul

just one more note to add...my drive stopped mounting to my mac pro via fw800 or fw400. it mounted via usb but was so painfully slow. but i was able to get it to read/write via firewire (not sure which speed) by attaching both fw400 and fw800 cables at the same time. i'm not sure which one is being accessed for data but it's fast and works for me.

We saw this happen the other day... had mounted to one of our Mac Pros... then would not again despite restarts and cable swaps, etc. Took the same drive to another Mac Pro, no problems. First Mac Pro was able to mount the next drive with no issues.

I'm kind of having the same problems with one drive now.

Production couldn't mount on a MAC using fw800 ports. They tried mounting to PC and it worked.

I got the drive today and now it doesn't mount to any of my MAC computers via all ports on the back of the drive and it doesn't mount to my PC either using FW400 and USB2.

I hear the drive spinning. It's powered by AC obviously.

Any ideas???

I heard there was a RAID controller reset button inside the drive that you can hold down for 15 seconds to reset. Anyone try that before?

i just went to disk utility on the mac and it shows up there as the 596.2GB OEM drive.

it's connected via fw800 right now. so it sees it but doesn't mount...

does that help with any thing for solving the issue?

Yes. Try to mount it mount the disk there or do it manually from the terminal. That may work, but chances are you have a corrupted partition map that may need to be repaired. Very likely the case if it mounted on someone's PC, but not the Mac and yet the correct data size is reported. If the data on the drive isn't needed, I would wipe the drive clean, including any partitioning, maybe low-level (zero format) too.

Hi Jeff,

How do I do that? I tried formatting from Disk Utility and it would not let me. It says "Timed out". Keeps happening when I try to format it. Should I format it on the camera? How do you do it from the terminal as you say?

The data was already backed up so I can wipe it clean.

Thanks,

N
