I think that the red drives need defragmentation or some sort of maintenance. Does anyone know how to do this and if it is necessary. I think that lately the camera drops frames and has playback problems maybe because of the drives. So, any help would be very welcome.
Thanks

Yep, like Brent says. No defrag necessary. Just reformat before each use... At that point the file system is "clean".

If you are having lots of drop frame issues with drives, you may have another problem with the camera, cables or a physical problem with the drives.

Formatting problem

Formatting problem

On a similar topic, recently when formatting Red Drives, the camera (B17 v3.4.1) will stay in the formatting mode indefinitely, forcing me to power down the camera after 20 minutes or so.
They usually format after starting up again, but this seems to be happening more frequently lately, and obviously time consuming and worrisome. I have 3 different drives and happens randomly to each of them. I have also swapped the drive cable but no difference.
Anyone experience this at all?

yes, several times, when using CF, eject CF, insert HDD and then formating hdd. It freeze more than 10 minutes before I have to power off.

I notice one thing... use the Exit/Undo combo when unmounting, instead of system / media / unmount, lead me to less freezing/bug. i don't know why because it must be the same thing.

Hey Jordi,

This is normal, drives never format to capacity. True on Computers as well.

Sorry if I'm out of topic, but talking about the Red-Drive I got mine not long ago and when I plugged it in my MacBook Pro to check if it worked, when displaying the drive info in the OS it showed like it was 298GB (or so), not the 320GB claimed in the specs.
Does anyone know why?
Thank you!

Yes, this is true of all hard drives... HDD industry defines "gigabytes" in the literal since in that it is 1000000000 bytes. Your computer defines "gigabytes" as 2^30 == 1073741824 bytes (it's a binary representation thing). So when you buy a "320GB" HDD, it has a capacity of 320,000,000,000 bytes and when the computer formats that number of bytes into usable space, you get 32x10^10 / 1073741824 == 298GB.

Hi. Yesterday I was checking the new Red Drive 320GB which just arrived and I had some problems with it as well.

I check the hardrive on my MacBookPro and there were no problem.
Then I check it on the camera and the 1st time the camera recognize the HD but when I try to format it after a while the camera Freezes. I unplung the battery to re-start the camera and as well try diferen RedDrive cable and happens the same thing, so I cann´t give a format to the HD.

By the way the REDONE is a 17v3.4.1 build.

Also I didn´t had the time to check how the camera works if you have a CF on the slot and the HD conected at the same time. How it is works ?

Thanks

Though like a harddrive on your computer Jeff, the old data from previous shoots is still there on the drive, it isn't completely deleted or overwritten. A way to be sure that the reddrive is as close to its original state as well as the ability to test the drives for read/write speeds on the camera and have a report of the drives ability compared to the 100% a brand new drive ought to have would be a great indication of the life of it. I'm dreading the day one of these things fails and any means of indication it's on its last legs would be great. The camera isn't doing enough reporting for my liking.

I've been having the same problem, and today, it got so bad that I couldn't resolve it with multiple attempts at reformatting on the Mac (each time the formatting process would freeze and crash the camera). I posted a similar note a while back, and since no one from RED has commented on either this or my thread, I suppose I'm going to call tech support on Monday and see about sending the drive back for them to try and sort out.

Cheers,
Frazer
