OK, so got my new Red Drive 640 last week, a shot this weekend. Got a few SATA errors, but the shots we got on Saturday we were able to copy to the MB Pro no problem.

Formatted the drive Sunday and shot the key interviews throughout the afternoon. No errors, TC running fine, and drive % displayed fine. Never dropped the rive, very careful, etc.

So I try to mount the drive today and the Mac tells me it is unable, do I want to format, ignore or unmount (sorry if the term is wrong... newish to Macs).

So I try to understand RedUndead, and it tells me "Done" to the various things I throw at it, but no files recovered.

I download R3D Data Mgr, and it scans and locates the drive, both the physical and logical drives. I tell it to recover both drives (different tries) and point it to a 2Tb external drive with a "Recover" folder. Multiple attempts and ash time it tells me "Scan Finished, but no files..

So I am hosed? Should I hook it back to the Red, capture a short clip and try again? Or are the killer, one in a lifetime interviews gone:(

Thx for any guidance,

Scott

Followup....

I started up the Red with the Red Drive attached and can play (at least the last clip) just fine. So the data footage (at least the last lip) appears to be on the drive. But again, on connecting to the MB Pro, it tells me it can't mount the drive. "Initialize, Ignore or Eject"

By the way, the drive is FAT 32, I assume that is normal. This is the first time I have worked with the Red Drive.

So again, the for any assist....

Well, although I do not understand it, the drive ill not show up on the Ma. It worked fine Saturday, but today the Mac will not recognize/mount it. On the Vista64 machine, shows up fine with all R3D files available.

Not sure whats up with the Mac, I rebooted it several times, but no show......
And I just noted I am a "Senior Member"... not sure how that happened!

Have you been using the ac power supply? Some have had problems in the past toasting RED RAIDs with firewire bus power... but I can't say if it's playing a role here.

Sure sounds like a computer problem more than a drive problem. Try all of your outputs, firewire 800, 400 and USB. Try multiple inputs on your computer to verify none of your computer plugs are hosed. Make sure you power the drive from the adapter to eliminate that as any kind of issue.

Good Luck!

I tried USB and external power, and the OS doesn't recognize the drive. I tried USB and FW, nothing. So yes, sounds like the MB not the drive. It immediately showed up as soon as I plugged it into either FW or USB on the Vista64 system, so I will copy et files to an external drive there then bring them over to the Mac. Workaround but it works.

I actually have the directors My Book hooked to ESATA and it works fine. As I mentioned, the Red Drive worked fine Saturday (well, except for a series of SATA errors, but we seem to know what causes that).

Thx for the info,

Scott

Hi Scott

You need to reset the firewire bus and flash the NVRam.

www.brownianmotion.co.uk

That doesn't help as the Magazine is seen by Mac os X from now on as an unformatted disk.

Scott I know how to immediately fix this problem. I've had this error sometimes and found a solution months ago.

You must use software that will copy files from a Device instead of a 'mounted' Volume.

I never really "solved" it. I think that if I format the drive using OSX (as DOS) then it mounts and works on the Red and then works on the Mac. If I format it on the Red I get mixed results. Now, I have not thoroughly tested this, but it seems to work.

Red did ask me to send it back and they have a fix for it. But I haven't had time to loose the rive, as I only have the 1 drive and 1 16Gb card and a tight schedule.

In my case, if I attached the drive to the PC, no problem seeing the drive and all files. So I just used the PC as an intermediary and transfered the files that way. The Red saw the files and would play them just ine. It was only the Mac that was/is a problem. But doing the way I mentioned aboe works fine, so until I get downtime, I will use that work around.

Hey, had a similar problem. I hooked it up to 2 mbp's, using all the connections and AC adapter and a dell using Vista. Wouldn't show up!

Took it home and used my gf's vfx machine running xp64 and it showed right up!
Gotta love XP.

BTW, it was bus powered over FW400.
