  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Drive alternative?

Think about it this way.

Red Drive > 320GB > 2.75 hours of 4K > $900
Firestore FS100 > 160GB > 2.5 hours of 720P > $1999

I'll take Red Drive, actually two please. Thank you!

I am curious to see how the solid state turns out. I've been learning a little bit about that lately. Could be really cool once it's implemented in a RAID drive. Speeds are pretty impressive.

The SSD thing is definitely an indicator of the complexity - as if it were as simple as it might seem from the outside, then the RED-RAM would have been out ages ago.

It would seem as simple as getting some SSDs and sticking them in the RED Drive in place of the 2.5" drives already in there. But clearly that hasn't been the case.

Drive Alternatives

Any news on possibilities, of using third-party drive solutions instead of Red Drive?

Its not supported. Unless you can tolerate dropped frames, file based recording to non-RED branded drives isn't viable.

However recording the 720p 4:2:2 output to an external DDR system with HD-SDI inputs may be a different matter.

Nop, according to red tech guys normal s-ata drives will not work because of custom firmware in the raid controller. Unless some one slice up a $200 drive cable and solder on a normal s-ata connector and have a go at it. There is always a chance then the law of things-always-fu, that a "sort-of-normal-just-plain-stadard-working" sata spec where used, and a forgiving sata raid controller can speak with.

So anyone with a spare drive cable, voltage meter and some patience finding right pins, please test! :)

Hey, I'm all for the Red-Drive. I just placed my order for Red plus many accesories, but for some reason the Red drive no longer seems to be available. Anybody know why you can't even place a deposite for one anymore?

They are delivering previous orders. Many are waiting on them, but I think they where close to be in phase now. I'm also waiting to order 2 drives, but have not been abel to do so yet. This issue of using third part drives have been discussed more just because of the red-drive backorder. I think it's not worth using third part drives and risk having dropped frames, but in the alternative not to having a drive at all, I'd go with a third party drive. To use flash cards is good, but alternatives are good. Better to have 2 backup solution than none :)
