I know this happens when the lens is stopped way down(f22), however, what actually causes it?

Its a reflection of the sensor.

Actually that can start to happen between f8 and f11 depending on the lens and light source. From my digging it seems to be from light bouncing around between the OLPF and the sensor?

Had this happen on a job a few weeks ago and was wondering what caused it. Cool to finally know.
