  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED doing just fine at -20C

Very nice! And now I am going to turn up the heater......

What did you use to keep the camera/batteries warm? We are heading back up the mountain to shoot Thursday night for a few days. Last week I deffintiely saw a decline in the battery life and it was only around 32F/0C!

Makes me shiver just looking at some of the shots. I like the shift at end, the golden color of the sunlight (and its promise of spring.) Very nice.

Wow, a lot of shots in that time and conditions, great work.

That's the beauty. No protection whatsoever. Camera, GMP batteries, 7" Lcd, CF cards. Worked just fine. (While the LCD display in the car slowed down to a refresh rate of about .5 hertz...)
Martin,
Watch out for frost on the 7" LCD front shield- it will destroy the coating. I've replaced some already...

Very nice, and I thought the 14F temps we get here was cold!

Thanks. I've done some ENG and a lot of documentary work, so I've gotten quite good at milking locations. I've only used about half the shots I did, and had I not done the timelapses, I'd could have done one more location.

Jacek,
Is there any way to protect the screen? I've seen some scratch protection plexi-glass constructions, but would those help against frost?

Thanks! Today we had -20F and neither car wanted to start. So, enjoy the warmth :)

Thanks Martin.

Very nice footage with a proof that RED1 works well in a cold weather.

Absolute love to the images, the place, the cold.
Lens? Filters?

Lenses: yes.
Filters: no.

To be more exact, mostly Contax Zeiss primes, my favourites being the 85mm/1.4, some 50mm/1.4, some 135/2.8. The macro shot and the very long one were done on the 135 with a doubler. On the wide shots I used the Sigma 10-20mm on the 10mm setting (fun setup, as it has a Pentax mount, so I need both an adapter from Pentax to Canon and a piece of lens paper to set the f-stop.)

Looks Awesome

Looks Awesome

Martin,

The shots look awesome. I really like the grading as well. They make me want to go out and shoot right now.

Looks great, I know Im looking forward to cold tests of the Epic/Scarlet to see if it works in my conditions. It was freaking -38C out today without the wind!

reminded me of living in Utah! but great shots.

The other day, I did a lens test comparison between my Nikon primes and some focal length equivalent Contax Zeiss primes. The Contax Zeiss lenses had an ever so slightly cooler (blue) look to them. Not that you needed that where you were shooting.

You are a brave man to expose your body and equipment to that kind of cold weather. However, you captured some really beautiful footage. Well done.

Martin,
If you are working it hard in the cold, then would it be correct to say that it is acting as it's own heating unit?

If somebody was shooting at a lesser level of intensity, they may run into problems.

A good excuse for shooting hard and shooting fast!
