  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED DAY

Members of the ASC, both Active and Associate, attended and were blown away by the footage. Many were Academy Award winners. It was amazing to see footage lit by a match with no noise. The Mysterium X sensor opened up the images on both ends. It felt like 3D. Is it worth the expense? Absolutely. I will be the first in line to have my camera converted. Red has taken a beautiful camera and made it even more beautiful. Francis Kenny, ASC

The footage on Sony's new 4k projector was amazing, especially the Leo shot. My jaw just hit the floor. It was said it was shot @ 2000, but we checked the metadata on one of those takes which was said it was @ 1000. They said the redcine-x software still had some glitches, so the meta reset could have been wrong on it. Regardless, even @ 1000, it was pretty breathtaking. Finally we can feel safe shooting moody & dark lit scenes without worrying about too much noise.

Playing with the cameras with the MX upgrade and using Red's new false color that only shows where you're blowing out highlights and where the noise is, there seemed to be noise there, but nowhere near the R1. The R1's were connect to NEC monitors through the HDMI output, so I'm not sure if there was induced noise there. The noise levels seemed to change dependent on the monitors we were looking at.

The 800 ISO seemed to be pretty accurate with the new RedColor view mode, which is a different way to view the live image where Rec709 or RedSpace would have been. (Both are now gone, but we were assured that RedColor was fully Rec709 compatible. We had a light meter and measured the 2 banks lighting the motorcycle, but a grey card would have given us better and more accurate results. You could pretty easily tell how RedColor was pushing the curve by flipping between RAW & RedColor with the spot meter on. The shadows & lower mids showed only slight pushing in the neighborhood of 2-5 IRE while the highlights had a difference of 20+. Then in the extreme highlights, they were back to being similar IRE's again. So the mid to high levels of the image are being pushed, then rounded back down. If that makes sense.

Also, switching to Tungsten did invite more noise in the image than daylight, which could be clearly seen in the new false color. It would have been nice to turn up one of the dozen or so Briese's in the room (used for mood lighting) to see what it could do under more tungsten light.

One of the more exciting things was the demo for the new RedCine and being able to control it and the Lift/Gamma/Gain window using the tangent wave. We'll be picking one of those up immediately.

The Epic's and Scarlet's form factors were impressive and were smaller and lighter than I had thought they were. Handheld is going to be a million times better now. None of the models were functioning, so I hope the weight was accurate.

The Bomb EVF was working on one of the R1's, so they're backwards compatible. They're about a third the size and weight of the current EVF's. I hope they'll start selling those soon. There's a few ways to mount them and seemed to hold their positions well.

All in all, a really great day. Thanks to Red for it and all the presenters. The future looks very promising and I'm looking forward to it!

I can add to this- I measured some of the lights lighting the motorcycle (at 800 on my meter) and set the camera's stop to what I might consider a key light that I would want "normally" exposed. With the ISO on camera set to 800 the image looked as one would expect. Without a grey card it's hard to tell exactly but it does seem like the light meter and camera ISO have a MUCH closer match (if not perfect) to produce expected results than the current R1 setup. Big victory here for the new color science.

The metadata for the Leo shot was indeed ISO1000 as it came up in Redcine X but playing around in RedcineX it looked great at ISO2000 as well. When that shot came on the projection and Leo struck the match I was blown away by how bright his face got. Michael or someone at the LightIron booth area said that it was a shot at T.13, which was fairly evident due to the very shallow focus. (Master Prime) Looked amazing.

Having Lift, Gamma, and Gain color controls in Redcine X is a dream come true. My lab will now be on set with me as I can now directly supervise dailies grading. I've been waiting years and years to have this kind of control over dailies color. Now we've got it and at such an affordable, accessible price. I hope that the Lift, Gamma, Gain metadata that is dialed in with Redcine X will somehow travel with each individual clip file in whatever the new RSX-like standard will be.

FLUT control is interesting and seems to fine tune the ISO without losing highlight/ shadow information. Can't wait to get some more time with the new chip and color science.

Very impressive day. I'd say you could have maybe JUST shown the Leo shot and I'd have been happy enough! Thanks for the event- it was amazing.

So I don't know if this is cool with the RED people or not. If it isn't feel free to delete away! I wanted to post some of my pics from the day at RED-Studios Hollywood.
Enjoy

Just wanted to congratulate you for that awesome look you achieved in these Stills from RED DAY - they have an awesome cinematic feel to them, looks like you had carefully graded the raw files...

Thanks man! These were shot on my Canon G-11, no RAW just large .jpeg. Grading was done in lightroom, took about 5 min per image. I did a split toning on it, red for the shadow detail and a little blue for the highlights... :biggrin5:

That logo is bad ass :)
Availble anywhere?

Noooo, i just discovered that the side handle is "optional" on the scarlet. Another grand bites the dust :/

Is the Side Handle optional for the Scarlet Fixed? And that's the 2.8" Touchscreen in the picture, right?
