  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED DAY... Feb. 13th

Thanks Jim! I really appreciate that reply, still trying to fully understand this. Let me pull out one statement in there

Does this mean that the iso setting in Red MX changes the way it records light information? On Red1 you could set it from 320 to 2000 and you werent changing zilch about what was actually getting recorded, has this changed on M-X? Or are you speaking to the effect that if I push it to 800, it'll cause ME to further protects the highlights via either more ND or further stopping the lens?

Thanks!

Actually, with your M R1... the higher ISO you selected, the more highlight protection you have. It is the same with both cameras. M-X just handles higher ISO better. And yes, if you choose more highlight protection (by selecting a higher ISO) you'll need NDs or to stop down. It isn't a requirement. You can shoot ISO 320, stop down until the highlights you want to save are not clipped and raise the midpoint in post (same as before). You are effectively doing the same thing.

Hey RED Team,

Great job with the event. It was great to finally see all the stuff I've been reading about (and planning to purchase) in person. Some things really stood out to me... the guy you have making accessories like the Gunner and the shoulder mount is seriously talented. I stood by that booth for about 40 minutes and wasn't bored for a second. To be able to hold the Scarlet in my hand also was fantastic, it gave me a great idea about what to expect. And the 3D booth? Wow. That was truly neat.

I also spoke with Aaron Peak from Hollywood DI for quite some time... he was quite possibly the most helpful person I spoke to at the event. I learned a ton about how RED works, and what to expect from the upcoming Scarlets. In short he convinced me that the S35 is probably the best choice.

Which leads me to a couple questions.... If you can't answer them, no big deal, but I'll post them anyways because they're eating at me (and my wallet).

-What's the status of the S35? Perhaps the most appealing camera you guys plan to release has been discussed the least. When will we get more details about how it's coming along?

-Are we near the point when we'll be able to see sample video clips out of the three different Scarlets in order to help decide which is the best choice? I feel I'm at the point where I know a lot about the cameras and their differences tech-wise, but don't really know which to get because I haven't seen visual comparisons yet.

-The Scarlets were said to be available this summer. Will precedence be given to current RED One owners? The reason I ask is because I don't want to get prepared to shoot with a RED over the summer, only to find out that I (not a RED owner) wouldn't be able to get my hands on one until much later.

If someone could answer any of this, it would be immensely helpful. If not, that's alright... I'm sold as can be, and I'll wait 5 years if that's what it takes. RED is the company I want to do business with, and the more transparent you are, the more I'm sold. Thanks again for RED day, and your overall transparent attitude as a company.

Sounds like good old fashioned film photography to me :) music to my ears

Whoa, for 2+ years I've thought and told people that changing ISO on Red only changed metadata and didn't change the way the sensor recorded light. I'm feeling confused right now.

Well I'm happy with my current imagery and looking forward to M-X when I get my cam back! I'll have fun re-learning the way the camera works and responds.

The way I read it, your understanding is still correct. ISO is still metadata on the recorded image, though it affects the monitor/viewfinder brightness. Shooting at higher iso protects highlights because of what YOU do when ISO is higher, in reaction to the brighter monitor image. That is, stopping down and/or adding ND, to reduce the light hitting the sensor and the brightness of the monitor image.

Another way to think of it is, setting the camera ISO is not really a camera control, it is a cinematographer control :-).

And it really will affect the way you shoot. The image brightness will speak to the brain more than any exposure tool.

I still can't really tell what the Gunner is supposed to be. Can someone elaborate?

can someone please explain how the RED RAW recording works in a few short word... I use a 7D now so I understand the lingo... but please explain how the camera makes an image based off the settings I put into the cam i.e. ISO, T/, Shutter Speed, white balance... this would be greatly appreciated. Or at least point me to a direction in which I can find out.

Isn't that like $2500... yeah I think not I understand post and everything I just wanted a breakdown of what the settings are going to do when I input the into the camera...

My favorite part of RED Day that I forgot to mention, Q&A was over, the Exit had been opened and people were huddling around the RED guys in the front to talk it up. While I was waiting to speak to Jim there was a german bloke who was showing Jim foreign film magazines that were trying to downplay RED's products and way of doing business as a 'religion'.

Jim laughed hard enough to warrant removing his cigar, threw up his arms and said: "What, it is a religion! Guilty as charged!"

I managed to succeed in suppressing maniacal laughter.

Shawn, you've been right all along. Jim is talking about the way you interpret the RAW information (ISO) and the direction you might find yourself pushing the whole frame with "hard exposure tools".

To protect highlights you want to avoid clipping those hot areas, the only way to do that is with filters, closing your iris, or lowering (shorter) shutter speed. These hard tools change your recording, your RAW files.

With Mysterium you could then bring up the shadows a lot before showing noise.

With Mysterium-X you can bring up the shadows a heckuva' lot more before showing noise. That lets you "protect highlights" more, by allowing you to shoot darker with more filters, smaller T-Stops, and shorter shutters.

Updated Release Dates

Updated Release Dates

There will be a RED Day on Feb. 13th for all Redusers at a location in Los Angeles (TBD).

This will be an all-day event where we will show EPIC and Scarlet prototypes, RED ONEs with Mysterium-X sensors, new accessories... and post solutions, including some new wrinkles. We will show 4K footage on a Sony 4K projector and will also show RED footage film prints. There will be several guests showing accessories for RED and post solutions.

More details coming in the next few weeks.

Jim

Jim, when are you guys going to give us an update on the release date of the new cameras?

We are all eagerly awaiting! :)

As soon as they have something to tell us. They wouldn't be hiding anything that they could say. They want these cameras released a lot more than most people on this forum...you can bet on that. :001_smile:

I guess some testing is in order, but you have to remember that RED right now typically gets rated at 320 and MX will probably be rated around 800. That's one stop. That actually is a big deal, but it's 1 stop difference in the way people shoot now. I think it would be a mistake for everyone to leave their lights at home.

I know there's a lot of MX excitement, but I was pretty thrilled with RED footage at RED day myself.

(on another note - RED day was harried for me and I really didn't see as much as I wanted to. Later I found out footage I shot was showing at one of the booths and I never saw it. RED day needs to be longer. Dammit. LOL!)

I was on my way out of the morning session and passed by the projector, when out of the corner of my eye I saw a huge steaming pile of sh*t.

Sure enough, it was Manure, the film I was fortunate enough to operate on with David Mullen ASC. Even though the movie was finished in 2k, they had re-rendered a few 4k clips there. So seeing it on the big screen with the Sony 4k projector - well, Ive never seen sh*t look so good.

Broadcast stuff at Red day

Broadcast stuff at Red day

Thank you to the entire RED team for making this possible. I really enjoyed the event.

I'm especially excited for all the new broadcast television support, Scarlet integration, quick turnaround tools. This will change broadcast forever.

I had one quick question though that I forgot to ask.

How does the 1080P of the Scarlet compare to the 5D, F35, and RED One zone chart that was displayed?

Interested to hear more about this Michael, you are the only one who mentioned it (in this and one other thread on RED day Feb13th).

Can you elaborate on what was mentioned on these fronts for those who weren't able to attend?

In a side note :

I recently went to the broadcast Video expo in the UK and the Red was everywhere. Almost every major stand (apart from those run by other camera manufacturers of course) had one on it. Almost 1/4 of the seminars that could have covered it (i.e. the ones about post or production rather than commissioning and lighting) were entirely about it. Red has hit broadcast production in a big way if there was buzz about anything it was 3D and Red. Glad to see they are all catching on. Still a lot needs to be done to help them all understand it properly - and that's where I plan to come in!

Hi there, I´m curious, do you have a RED day in Argentina or any part of Southamerica?
It´d be nice to have seminars or some kind of event down there. Does anybody know?
Thanx!!!
