RED cradle...

Anyone else having issues with cradles not locking down the harddrives? We have four so far:sad: Is it the casting on the drives or the cradles?

I had the same problem before and luckily I mentioned it to Curt from Viewfactor at the LA Users group meeting as he was demoing his gear on my camera.

He said all I need to do was "flip the rails around" and since people hadn't started showing up yet, he did if for me. He just took the screws all the way out and reversed the rail and screwed it back. You may have to play around with it a bit--but the secret is in there! Basically, instead of pulling they are now pushing or vice versa (Honestly I don't remember which was is which)

Now it works like a charm--thanks to Curt.

I tried the flip trick, but it didn't work. Presumably because I have a really low serial number cage.

The solution I found was to grind down the rail where it intersects with the cage just enough so that when you tighten the screw it pulls the rail away from the drive enough to be tight. Worked perfectly. I would guess I filed away about 1 mm of metal. And I only needed to do it to one rail.

This is a known issue which has been resolved very early on. If you are having problems with your Cradle, call your rep, they should be able to settle this issue rapidly. I'm #500 and my Cradle works fine. It pulls the rails (vs pushing). We did loose a screw recently on a shoot, so we put two allen screws with washers on one rail and tied it down tight, now we only finger tighten the screws on one side to hold the drive in place, works like a charm.

so we send you the rails ...
Red evaulates them ...
and then you either replace them or send them back?
in the event you send them back ?? we still have craddle that will not lock in the drive ...
if you replace them and send them back and that doesn't do it .. we still don't have a drive that locks down ... so then i send in the whole craddle ?

all the sending/receiving takes up TIME and takes the craddle out of service ...
my time is VALUABLE .. so by the time i box em, drive to fedex , pay for fedex .. it's gotta be less $$ to just buy the 2 rails .. if they work GREAT .. if they don't i send Red the new plus old rails & the whole craddle in for a fix...
that way it's only out of service one time period ..
been waiting since mid Jan. for a fix !!!
so how do i order 2 rails for the craddle ? ( the kind that tightens by pulling outward)

I was right there beside you watching. The default was pushing. After his little flip fix, it was pulling. Hope that helps.
