  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

can someone clearly explain exactly how to power the RED from the wall ( no batteries)

the RED MX now has a new power adapter.

that plugs into wall? then the RED charger? then the 10 foot lemo to camera?

Mike

I've had an AC power supply as long as I've had my camera, not sure if it's any different from the one they send back with the MX upgrade...

My guess is that they may want to discourage people from trying to use house power via the charger and DC cable? Nevertheless, we were shooting on an MX today using an AC unit exactly like mine (the large one with ridges, not the smaller units they started selling later).

Either way, it's simple. Plug the AC unit into the wall, the other end (lemo) goes into the camera.

Can't wait to see what you and MacGregor do with MX...

Mike, you're overthinking this a bit. One end of the new AC power supply plugs into the wall, the other end plugs into the camera. That's it. (I did it all day today. It works.)

If you want to power the camera with the charger, leave the new AC power supply in the case. Plug the charger into the wall, plug one end of the the 10-foot Lemo cable into the charger, and plug the other end of the cable into the camera. But the charger has fans, makes noise, and will not make you the friend of the guy with the audio gear.

ok, so the new adapter that came with RED MX cameras should plug into wall then into Camera's 6 pin LEMO. no old charger?

ok cause I am trying to solve a drive problem. that I thought may have been caused by not doing the wall power right.

you ever have a drive start recording, but then when you hit stop, it won't stop? and you have to power down camera?

Correct.

I've never seen this, but unless you can verify that this happens with wall power and does not happen using battery power, I would not suspect the power supply. If the wall power/battery test suggests that wall power is the source, then I'd check the voltage -- first the voltage coming out of the power supply, and then the voltage coming out of the wall to see if they are up to spec.

Mike, I think this is the "failure to Post" bug where the camera hangs while trying to create the QT proxies. It has been said you can keep it from happening by unchecking the make QT proxies button in the menu. But I once had it happen even with the in-camera QT proxies turned off. It is an old bug and probably one of the worst of all. It may be possible to recover the take with RedUndead.

cheers much appreciated. It seems to happen when the RED was powered from the wall where as before it didn't happen when powered from the batteries...

so that is what I was thinking....

tomorrow we shall see if we can create a repeatable situation.

Drive issue

Drive issue

The typical cause of the "failure to post" problem is a RED-DRIVE or interface cable issue.

Contact RED technical support to have them check that out.

I have to disagree with Stuart on this completely. We have had MANY "failure to post" issues over the years (over 100), and they are always when we were using RED-branded CF cards. We seldom have them using the drive. Those failures are very rare. With the cards, we had a ton, especially on earlier builds. We have it rarely now (Build 30), but it still does come up on occasion.

Further, contrary to what Curran has stated, you do NOT need REDundead to recover these shots. The R3D file is still there, it's just the proxies that were not created. All you need to do to recover the proxies, if you are so inclined (and since we edit using the proxies, it's essential for us), is to just open the clip in REDAlert and ask it to "make proxies." Done. This procedure has never failed us.

Ah, now I remember. It was only the time where it failed to post when I had the "Make QT proxies" turned off that I needed to run RedUndead. I still think the "Failure to post" bug is less likely to happen with the in-camera QT proxies turned off though.
