RED celebrates Sony...

5 years

5 years

I just based my opinion on some external factors that are public and known to everybody, including the timeframe (5 years) to develop something like Red camera with the type of resources they have.

Joofa

Joofa, you do recall that RED ONE shipped on Sept 01 2007 don't you?

Epic and Scarlet are our second generation products and we are only a little more than 5 years into our commercial existance...

In any case this thread is way off topic, the purpose was to welcome Sony to the 4K club...

Yes, Stuart, I do recall, and I did not say the Red One camera. I just said Red camera, where in my mind I was thinking about the overall camera development program. Sorry for the confusion in my language.

But, you are right about being off topic. So I will leave it at there.

Sincerely,

Joofa,

EPIC isn't late... it is two years early, at least from a competitive standpoint.

As far as I know, there isn't another digital cinema camera shipping that does 4K, let alone 5K motion. I don't see any other camera with more DR than HDRx, including film. I don't see any camera as small as EPIC, except for a line-skipping sub-1080p DSLR. I don't see any other system that shoots a form of RAW to a chocolate bar. And I don't see anything on the horizon that comes close to this package.

We said all along we have no idea what we are doing... so what's your point? :-)

Jim

[This starts off topic and ends on topic]

With the “current economic climate” …(yeah I know yawn, yawn) there are some corporate clients that one can do business with, but there is this sense in certain sectors of almost corporate desperation where they only care about massive volume and VERY big numbers. Which in some cases, will lead to their demise, (very unfortunately). It certainly is possible to do business with these types of entities but what happens is that you get locked into VERY inflexible arrangements and you start asking the basic question, what is it that we are giving up or risking, just to be able to develop a decent business relationship or partnership? In the old days you would synch up schedules of one sort or another and have firm agreements on production numbers and so on. Nowadays the turnaround time from innovation to market ready product is so much shorter and the products in some cases are so new, that there are NO sensible market figures or projections that can be put together, other than very conservative ones. The world (I feel) is really changing and needs to change, especially in the way we do business (yeah, I know haggard clichés).

This is why these days, working with companies that are a little more “casual” i.e. much less controlling and rigid, frankly is a really good thing, and this opens the door to much greater possibilities as they naturally unfold and NATURALLY DEVELOP. I think people starting new businesses today are seeing first-hand the limits of “old school” projections, and that a much more flexible approach has to be adopted that has a realistic and deeper understanding of the genuine uncertainties at its heart. In a lot of cases you are creating the market as you go along, RED is a very good example of that.

I think everybody that has been able to foster a working relationship with Red has had a very good experience, and there is the sense that WE (as a whole) get to build something together, a project, a business or in some cases a whole new paradigm for the broadcast industry I.e 4k (see I’m on topic) .

That is special, if not absolutely unique.

Ok so there’s the idea that a whole ecosystem of 4k is good for business especially if you are RED, you can’t do these things in a total vacuum, not even SONY can, so the fact that everybody is pitching in to make it happen IS good for business all round, (yeah!) :)

Of course the words “welcome aboard SONY” don’t really roll off the tongue very easily, my throat starts to tighten, … (I’m not indoctrinated,…am I? …blink, twitch, twitch)

Has “SONY” publicly acknowledged the existence of EPIC yet?

Has “SONY” publicly acknowledged the existence of EPIC yet?

I would say : "Has RED publicly acknowledged the existence of SONY yet?"

Seriously...come on ! Sony released so far only few prototypes of their "cinema" cams, and that new 4K prototype will be only available on renting (maybe with a Sony engineer hired to handle problems on set).

In the same time, RED released more of 8 000 RED ONEs and 200 EPICs. The R1 is the most selling cinema camera of all times, ALL TIMES ! Period.

Sony is a very small challenger in cinecams... They only screwed few movies like SW new trilogy & 2012. :D

Why, what he wrote is mostly true. RED has shipped far more PRO CINEMA cameras than SONY. The latter kills it on the prosumer and moreso on the DISPLAY SIDE

Jim - Stuart, eta l... I think people got the point... may I humbly suggest you close this thread. People seem bored, and what Jim said in the first post was enough. Just saying.

THREAD JACK!

I prefer to gently ask how the EPIC-X line is shaping up? With nearly 200 M's out there now... (WOW) are the lines still moving independent of each other?
or has the massive influx of M orders got you guys behind on the X?

With NAB 34 days away... a couple questions.
1. can some of us in the first 100 or so still expect to have an EPIC-X before the big day in VEGAS?
2. With M's being so new, are you now considering extending this ALPHA phase (despite every single camera coming back as BULLET PROOF :cheers2:) wink wink.
3. Is at least a final package announcement imminent for X so we can fiscally plan how much $ we can start wiring to our accounts?
4. I hope Im not pissing anyone at RED off asking these questions, because I'm assuming with what you must be learning hand building 200 M's, estimates should get a little easier for X, yes?

5. The # 1 reason Im asking is the other camera house in town is all high on ALEXA and DP's in our town are drooling over it and GLADLY PAYING $1500/DAY and its really PISSING ME AND SHAWN NELSON OFF having to read those guys syrupy FB posts. "Alexa has the best images ever... etc etc ad nauseum"

THANKS!
