RED celebrates Sony...

I am surprised how many people are hating on Sony in this thread. Besides the high price tag and large form factor, this will be a knockout camera system no doubt. Sony makes rock solid gear, they always have. I am sure that this camera is not just a Red copy and Sony has made it their own. This should not be seen as a Red killer but rather another option to look forward to.

The images that come out of the camera are all that matter in the end. I am curious about the "ACES film emulation" they talk about. Is this some sort of film grain emulation? Exciting stuff.

You wonder why people outside of the Reduser community hate on Reduser so much but a lot of it has to do you how this community responds to other competitors. Sony is now shooting 4K. Good for them. Sony has a different product style than Red. Their cameras are not mass produced. They are rental house items only. They see their cameras as the digital equivalent of a Panavision 35 camera (which are six figure systems) so they are not going for the owner/operator crowd.

If Red was the only kid on the block, things would be pretty boring.

We'll take our chances with what we have planned for the future (not talking)... but I am very happy that Sony has validated 4K as the "real" cinema standard. For 5 years (more actually) I have been choking on the fact that some people actually believed that 1080p was a real cinema option.

I wonder how all those Sony customers who just plopped down a quarter of a million dollars on an oversized, underspec'd 1080p camera feel when they learn 4K is the immediate future....

I'd say they are guessing, that it is at least a year away from release. That's my guess.

Let's be honest and put 4K digital camera history on the list:

1. 2006 Red announced Red One 4K digital cinema camera.

2. 2006 Dalsa made Origin I, the first 4K digital cinema camera.

3. 2007 RED started to ship RED ONE 4K digital camera and till 2011 shipped more than 8.000 units.

4. 2007 Dalsa announced Evolution 4K digital cinema camera.

5. 2008 Dalsa Camera Division maker of Origin I, II and Evolution 4K cameras went out of the business.

6. 2008 RED announced EPIC 5K digital cinema camera.

7. 2009 Vision Research, an AMTEK Company, made Phantom 65, the first 4K (4096 x 2440), a high speed 140 frames-per-second (fps) at full resolution digital cinema camera.

8. 2009 Aaton announced Penelope - Δ (Delta) 4K digital + 2Perf/3Perf S35mm film, a hybrid cinema camera.

9. 2010 Japanese company View Plus showed Lumiere 4K digital camera system.

10. 2010 Sony announced 4K digital cinema camera.

11. 2010 (December) RED started to ship EPIC 5K digital cinema camera.

12. 2010 Canon announced 4K Digital Concept camera.

13. 2011 JVC announced a “Falconbrid" 4K digital cinema camera.

To be continued...

Just guess who could be the next?

Panavision or Arri?

Many here have turned to RED because they are an alternative to the way that Sony and the others choose to do things. I think it is commendable that RED congratulates the competition for the progress they make when they make it. Surely it is one of the ways they stand out as a company.

It would be good to add a second column for "shipped" in there too :-)

And although a commercial failure, Dalsa also deserves a mention.

Sorry that forgot Dalsa!

Corrected!

That list deserves more work and detail Sanjin.

And let's not forget there is a whole lot more to Red than just 4k. REDCODE is as important as the sensor IMO. Then there is updates, communication and now modularity and the luscious new ASIC. Oh, yea... and PRICES!

But Sony is kinda cool too. ;)

Its all about quality, price and workflow. Sony's current cheapest real 1080P workflow is the price of 4 Red Mx cameras. I commend them on their scientific endeavors for 2012, kudos to them. But Price and workflow wise they are still stuck in 2003.

As a cameraman, I welcome any additional tool.

As an owner-operator of both Sony and RED gear, I feel that Sony is a reliable supplier with no surprises, that delivers what they promise and incremental improvements. RED is full of good surprises, I always get more than what I signed up for, and I have never felt so taken care of as before.

I couldn't agree more with Jim's comment about Sony's new 4k camera announcement... I was in Melbourne Australia last night showing off the EPIC, some RED MX footage reels and RedCode RAW via the REDRocket card in the theater at LeMac, and we were discussing how happy I was that Sony has thrown their hat in the ring for a true Cinema resolution tool - good on them as the Aussies would say...

off to the opening of the new ACS clubhouse in Sydney now... here's a link from John Brawley's blog, an Ace DP shooting a TV show with REDs in Melbourne.. we had a fun day showing the team there the new camera.

Interesting to see what the competitors will bring up... as mentioned they are stepping behind red... the workflow what sony will bring up with there transcoding station etc. will be also interesting, but please think of what all the gear will cost... compare it to the existing camera and vtr solutions... the SR cards etc... in a country where we have most productions in the 1 to 3 million EUR segment nobody can deliver a better cost/quality comparison then RED, also in terms of rental costs and post production costs.
Some small amount of productions in Europe have a higher budget, but the main value is not in that area....

BTW a viewing and transcoding station which is rock solid also for field use will be not a bad idea, which can deliver you with all needed formats and instant backup....
