RED celebrates Sony...

It will be interesting how they do scaling from the 4:1 aspect ratio. While it isn't really an 8K camera... kind of half 8K, it is a considerable advancement nonetheless. Everyone will be anxious to see what the rest of the package looks like. Good on them.

Jim

Sony had announce that a little while back, but its my understanding that it wont see marketplace till 2012, and isnt the world ment to end by then...oops a little too late. seriously, at the pace your setting jim we will be well into 6k by the time they are fully
developed. I can never say thank you enough!!!

Like I said before, Sony was once a crown jewel in the industry, and they've become a victim of their own success. Their business model once centered around technological leadership and marketing - but now they're nothing more than snake oil salesman - and very good at it. If history is to repeat itself - I see their 4k solution as more of a kludge rather than the small footprint of Epic. If they can sell 100 cameras at the price of a lamborghini or Rolls-Royce, good on them - while at the same time RED will sell 10,000 Epics at the price of a volkswagen. And anyone buying one will have to have a very, very compelling reason to have one, especially if RED ships 5000 epics before even one Sony comes out the door. It reminds me a little bit about an ad in a computer magazine in the late 1980's for those of you who were Amiga fans: the slogan "While they are still tinkering with their 68020 boards, were up and running with our 68030 board" by CSA.

Great point. How DO you derive a true 4K image from 8Kish EDIT (4:1)?

Its normal thing and it is called innovator dilemma in economy - when company which was once pioneering in new technology later fail because they have hard time accepting newer technology.

Maybe RED will be in same position for couple of years, but i doubt (their role model is Apple).

4K from an 8K sensor, interesting...

meanwhile, I wonder how that little Monstro project of yours is progressing, Jim?

keep on pushing forward and pulling the rest of us -- large and small -- along...

"may you live in interesting times" indeed.

Now if we could just get 4K/5K digital capture without chroma sampling...

It doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me why Sony would come out with a new 4K camera, but devolve in terms of color space from the F35's HDCAM SR tape. Oh well.

Funny you bring this up. Just got back from my 2nd viewing of True Grit. Sony had a cheesy intro before the movie started satting "SONY DIGITAL CINEMA 4K" The Alamo Drafthouse here in Austin has had 4K projection for several years and just now Sony Starts embracing AD's about it, hilarious.

I think they got the message. They've been playing with R3D files a bit much

Sony's had 4K projectors in theaters for awhile now... this is nothing new.

Is this going to be the craziest NAB yet? So many things are coming together for this year's show.

Sony is showing up a bit late to the party. Presenting a prototype for a camera already behind the curve. Red is the way forward, and I think at NAB this year people will have no choice but to take notice. Long live the King.

.

How can you even suggest something like this? Like alot of the posts I've seen in this thread you have instantly dismissed Sony's proposed camera based off some text you have read in an article... No images, nothing!

Like Jim is suggesting, RED is not the be all and end all... Competition is healthy and as audiences members we have everything to gain from increased competition.
