We complain when other companies aren't adding to the advancement of the art so it is only fair that we acknowledge them when they do.

Sony's announcement of a 4K camera validates everything we have said for the past 5 years... 1080p is not, and has never been in our eyes, good enough. Digital cinema is 4K. I hope this discussion is now over. Thank heavens...

Bravo Sony.

Welcome Sony to 2007. Too bad 2011 is an Epic year!

I love when the big boys finally catch up to Red, because I know Jim and the Red team are already 3 steps ahead.

I love it when someone brings something interesting to the table.

Thing is, I will never own one, nor would I have the inclination to...they aren't meant to be bought but rented. I would prefer to practice my craft and develop my art on something that is mine whenever and wherever I want to. There is nothing quite like owning your own.

To me, it comes down to imaging philosophy.

Red's Imaging philosophy speaks to the needs of cinematographers.

Sony is still about large sensor video cameras.

Red is about Digital Cinematography.

To me, the Sony Philosophy comes from an underlying techo-conservatism that serves the needs of corporate hierarchy more than the needs of the artists and technicians that drive the craft.

But if someone is looking to create something with the "Sony Look" they can do that in 4k...some time in 2012 or so.

I will say this though - the F3 is a neat, but expensive toy.

Had to chuckle when I read this article....

http://www.fdtimes.com/news/sony/new-sony-camera-4k-and-beyond/

Particularly the lines:

"The bar has been raised again. Sony is planning to show the prototype of a new >4K motion picture camera at NAB 2011. This could be historic."

Someone should let the reporter know history was made 4 years ago and 4k is now a thing of the past... 5k anyone???

Go RED.

Reminds me of when Grant Petty, then at Digital Voodoo, release a $20k video card that did 10bit uncompressed. Discreet (now Autodesk) had to quickly chase their tails around the world to update their $1m boxes from 8bit - and then made a huge song-and-dance about how their gear was now 10bit. Sony are finally working towards a 4k camera, 5 years after Red did it and, no doubt, at multiples of the price. Expect huge sections of the industry to stand up and applaud as Sony, once again, leads from the rear.

Thanks again for waking up these sleeping giants. Your vision and the capital and acumen to make that vision a reality has forced these behemoths to shake up their business models. You truly have pushed the state of the art, and you'll hopefully continue to do so.

Thanks!

Actually... Sony will raise the bar as the sensor is 8K and not 4K. There are, however, many unanswered questions. What kind of compromises are there for putting that many photo sites in a Super 35/3 perf space? How sensitive are the photo sites? What is the DR? How good is their compression? What is the form factor ,cost, ROI, ...availability?

Soon enough we will know. ...and then soon after, if and when 8K catches on, RED will respond with a new brain that will work with my current kit! :patriot:

Its like they are going on the right direction but on the wrong altitude when we talk about pricing... I am positive in that matter, no one is even close to what red is doing.

Thanks!!!!!

Regardless of the standard "Oh look what WE invented", i.e., Toyota, et al. .......

Jim made a stand-up compliment recognizing the "competition" is at least trying, and they came a the realization that more is needed than <2K.

This story HAS been circulating since about 2006.
Maybe Sony thought there was not much point in bringing out another 4K sensor in an already Red-Saturated market, and decided to wait until they could up the ante on both Arri and RED. A bit like Henty Ford's 1930s decision to go straight from 4-cylinder cars to V8s
It will interesting to see a price tag.

Exactly!

Buy Sony, buy a whole new camera when it reaches end of life. Buy RED, just upgrade brain.

The 8k sensor is a big claim. I'd be keen to see specs to see if it's anywhere near the spec of RED.

Otherwise, wait until it's released and do a shoot out.
