Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)
Hello, I'm using RED camera with Canon 8-64 lens. I want to put mattebox clipon on the lens. Is that too much weight for the RED pl mount? should I use support for this lens? what kind of support?
Glik.
Hi Mitch
Do you think RED mount is strong enough?
The 8-64 lens is quite long, and with the chrosziel clipon on it...
Are you sure RED mount will hold it?

I hang my 200mm T2 Nikkor off the PL mount and it's no problem. I also see 15-40 and 28-76 Optimos with zoom motors, LMB-5s and two 4x5 filters hanging off it every other shoot. It's solid shoot and be confident but not stupid.
The mount can be strong, but I have seen Arri SR2 mounts, that are supposed to be strong too, being slightly out of wack, because of zoomlenses like this. The reason was that they put the camera box on the floor with some force/speed en the lens hanging on the body just was a bit too much. (Happened with Aaton's too)
So while it can be perfectly fine when the camera is not or in gentle motion, handling and severe and fast up/down movements CAN do something to any mount.
Nice and relatively cheap solution for handheld work: Long Valley´s Lightweight Support attached to the front of the camera with 15mm LW rods; I think you may leave the 8-64 unsupported but use the Chrosziel MB, with Chrosziel´s adaptor, mounted on the LW rods (that´s the way we do it).

My personal trick (I owned one of these with my Aaton kit for years) was to mount the gear for the followfocus underneath the lens pushing up. This lent a touch of support without actually having to use a lens support of any real kind.
