Hi there

i was wondering if anyone could help me with some information. We are thinking of purchasing a second hand red camera in australia to shoot a film and some other ventures we are looking at, but there maybe some downtime between shoots and i was wondering if it was viable to rent it out in between times. Does anyone know how many red cameras are available for rent in OZ and how often they are rented out?? I realise it depends on the amount of work at any given time, but before we invest in a camera (we dont have a lot of money) i would like to know a bit more about the rental market in oz.

Cheers for any advice
John

Hi John,

Welcome to Red User! There are quite a few cameras in oz, and the market is strong. Word on the street is that Reds are difficult to get, but I don't think that's accurate.

My guess is there are several dozen bodies for rent here. Some dedicated, some during downtime, as you are thinking.

My opinion is that the rental houses and private owners specifically set up for rental get most of the business, and rightfully so.

I have only rented mine out a couple of times, and only to close friends. Unless you really push it, or offer rates that will annoy the other owners, my experience is that the rentals don't magically show up. You have to go looking for them, and then they just want it cheap because you aren't a rental house! ;-)

Anyway, this is just my experience, which I think is pretty common among most of the Red owners I know anyway.

All the best,

Jim

Hi John,

Jim is correct there are more and more Reds in Oz everyday and the rates for camera rentals is falling even quicker.

The Red is a camera where dry hire rentals I feel would be an issue as there as so many bits to break / loose / incorrectly use etc. The cameras are not like a Digi beta where its all assembled and ready to go out of the case. Also almost every hire inquiry I get requests different gear as part of the package.

If you are going to kit up with ALL the Accessories and plenty of Lens choices, matteboxes etc then go for it. Otherwise you will have plenty of competition with other 3/4 complete kits with owners who want to take any money to at least get some income.

Regards,
Tim.

Lemac has at least seven. Panavision has a fair few. We have two and regularly rent them out.

Where you are and the local industry will drive what your rentals will be like. Sydney's pretty full just looking at the recent list Dave Farland sent out...

I have to agree with what others said.

Unless you have existing clients, it is unlikely you are going to rent your unit out. It is more about the relationships that you have rather than offering another camera body.
Also, a lens package and accessories may be a deciding factor. Most producers would like a one-stop-shop, where they can rent the whole package.

Same here. We bought ours for our own features but have set it up as a pretty nice kit (sans glass) just in case any rentals come by. But the reality is that people want a one stop shop where they can just rock up, grab the lot and drop it back at the end of the shoot. Even, like in our case, having only the one body available is, I believe, a limiting factor where a production would often want a second body.

That said, depending on where you're located, get in touch with other Red owners locally and see if you can't form a little group where you can all help each other out in times of need. I know Lemac are unable to rent out specific Red bits individually, preferring to keep their kits together and we've hired the odd battery from some other local guys and they know they can come to us for bibs 'n' bobs as well.

Bottom line I guess is I certainly wouldn't factor rentals into your business plan. If one comes along, buy yourself a beer. :cheers2:

What is the spread of rental rates for RED in Oz?
Lets say a RED one body, a wide zoom, 4x4 mattbox, batteries, drives, EVF and monitor?

Does anyone know any rental houses in Brisbane that rents RED(or compatible) lenses?

Cheers

We here at Evolution Studios (www.evolutionstudios.com) based in Toowoomba Queensland have recently purchase a Red One, with the Red Prime Lenses, and have kitted out the Red with a Red Rock matte box, and pull focus. We've also got the Bircher lens adapter for attaching Canon EOS lenses. We will be looking to hire this kit out once our backorder is fullfilled, which should be mid January. We are looking at pricing the entire kit at around $1100 a day, with discounts for weekly rental.
If anyone is interested in this, please let me know, and if our pricing is competitive to help out indie filmakers.
