I have two questions regarding Red Camera work flow.
I have an Intel Mac notebook, not a Pro. But it has a 120 HD and 2G of ram.
I am running quick-time 7.6.4
Final Cut Pro 5.0.4
OSX 10.4.11
My first question is: If I download Red quick-time codec to my computer, will I be able to view the associated Red quick-time files with FCP 5.0.4 or do I need to upgrade FCP to 6.2 ? Or is the version of FPC, even an issue when dealing with the Red quick-time files?
Second Question: Once I have rendered the raw Red Files and have them on a external hard drive, will I be able to view and edit them on my notebook using FPC 5.0.4 ??

FCP 5? Really? Wow. Yeah, you're probably going to want to upgrade. The RED installers technically bottom out on FCP6 (We're on 7 now) so you *might* be able to install it, but probably not.

That said, you're never going to get good results trying to edit natively on a MacBook. Pretty much the only way you're going to get reasonable performance is to transcode to *small* ProRes proxies (Like 1/4 res, if you shot 4K) and edit with those. Trying to work with 4K, or even 2K, on a macbook will make the baby jesus cry.

And you're probably going to want to track down another machine to do those transcodes on, otherwise you'll be rendering forever. Please tell me you at least have a FW800 port, if you're going to attempt it?

green!!!!

green!!!!

wrong post sorry

Thanks for the response.
I do Have a FW800
May be I should clarify what I want to do.
I am not the editor on this project. I am the producer.
So the editing will be taking place with a better computer.
I really just want to look at dallies on my personal notebook.
and later get some ruff edits sent over to me on an external hard drive.
I am just trying to find out if this will work with what I have now. With out buying a new computer and upgrading my OSX and FCP?
thanks

Ah, that makes sense. For dailies, you shouldn't have a problem. You won't get super-high performance, but you should be able to watch them. You won't need the FCP plugin for that, just the RED software or Clipfinder.

As far as edits go, you're probably out of luck. FCP projects aren't backwards compatible. So if your editor is working in FCP6 or FCP7, you're not going to be able to open the project file, much less worry about the RED plugin. Why not just have your editor export a ProRes or h.264 version of the edit for review?

Sorry to be a pain.
I went to clip finder The current version 2.2 requires an OSX of 10.5
Is there some where I can get an older version that will run on OSX 10.4.11 ??

FCP projects aren't backwards compatible. So if your editor is working in FCP6 or FCP7, you're not going to be able to open the project file, much less worry about the RED plugin.

FCP projects are backwards compatible, simply export an XML file of your project and open it in an earlier version of FCP.
