RED Camera + Accessory Bags

Hi,

I'm sure there are some that would disagree, but I'd bet that the majority of shooters would prefer something a little less fashionable.

My $.02

Steve

I think everyone here would like to see an option without the colorful trim. Maybe Black with a bit of plain old RED for the details. (The opposite of the one on your site) I know I would snap up a couple of the drive pouches if they were available like that.

Im sure Sarah has thought of that for further down the line!

Also another suggestion, could there be slots in/on the drive pouch for couple of CF cards, and a drive cable, so an AC could have a dedicated memory belt pouch with everything you might need? Even 1 or 2 slots would be nice.

Keep up the good work.

Thanks Andrew,

All the bags have the rear pocket for cables or for example CF cards in their plastic cases, but you raise another good point, some dedicated card slots maybe able to be incorporated into the design. I will look at that when the time comes to make some more.

Molly-B, State of the Play

Molly-B, State of the Play

Hi

Many thanks for all the comments, negative and positive. Its part of the process.

I have been in the film industry and around film equipment for over 35 years . During this career span I have helped the camera department and carried more than my share of camera cases in all their shapes and forms and this includes going on RED shoots here. So the idea was born for these products.

There was never any intent to create anything fashionable. I am proud of these items and I think they display a certain forethought with regard to functionality. Always room to improve though and I always knew that improvements would eventuate via Reduser feedback and thank those of you whom have contributed thus far.

First lets deal with the color .. check out the product page here, as you can see these items are available in 3 colors and the features are all mentioned. I was thinking of adding 2-3 other muted tones but given the reaction thus far, black seems to rule.

Now the trim. See the prototype photo, I experimented with a plain black and one with a simple red trim. Other generic bags are available with the red trim but I was reasonably happy with the plain black with subtle red stitching. Collectively a decision was made to try a batik strip to add some color trim, as the black in particular seemed dull.

During this time a friend whom is a Priestess here in Bali decided that she would present two batik sash's as worn by her assistant during a RED shoot here in the photos. As this was to bless the new business she suggested cutting them to be used as the trim. So we did. I am not saying I am a believer but I do respect the culture of the people whose country I live in. Anyone who has visited Bali will know how important religion is to the local people and that it manifests itself everywhere all the time. 2 million men whom wear batik sashes at least once a week are not considered "girlie" here.

So the special batik slash's were used and already have been replaced by a subtle braid more akin to a red strip. When I make some more, who knows, maybe I will just make it plain.

Please keep the ideas coming, good and bad they all help the Red community by keeping accessory makers like Molly-B thinking and improving.

Regards

Sarah

I understand the importance of the sash in local terms, but I think when you start to think more internationally you'll need to offer a more boring and utilitarian option. (Obviously youve already recognised this)

Im definitely in for that drive pouch, gonna wait and see what V2.0 looks like first though.

Cheers

Hi Andrew

We were caught in a Catch 22 situation with the batik trim.

But like I mentioned, there are only a handful of sets with it.
So I will post some photo's of other existing options later next week.

However, interest in these bags does not go much beyond the comments here at the moment. So its all a bit speculative.

Still I will wait and see what the next few days bring.

Giggle:biggrin: I thought you guys would be more secure with your masculinity, carrying around those big black Red's, to be making such a fuss over colour or fashionable accessories. Some more of this and I'm going to think that all your obsessing over equipment means something!

I am sure you'll design something with looks that please everyone.

I have a request to make. This may not be a big hitter but it may not hurt if you can find a way to make it happen without raising the production cost by much. Working in the cold batteries can give you as little as 30% of their battery life. A lot of cameras are owned by people in cities where it is very cold half the year, many of those even colder. A little selling point could be the ability to keep the Red Brick pouch on the battery while the battery was mounted. The pouch would then trap a lot of the heat naturally generated by the battery at work and significantly increase battery life. No juice no movie, so while this may seem small to someone in California it might be god sent to someone in NYC or Montreal. Just a thought I wanted to share since I've seen heads of wardrobe and costumers come up with some nifty solutions to other issues before.

A few years ago someone stole my Black Spectra IV. I was ordering a new one and the Spectra Rep asked me if I wanted it in Black, Red, or Yellow. My initial reaction was black of course. Because then it would look like... every other one... that was ever... made. I bought a red one. In the years since, though I have seen many, many Spectra IVs, I have not seen another one that is red. Benefits: More easily identifiable as mine, the color helps me find it in a run bag or on a dark set, and all the "masculine" thieves won't steal it! Plus, It's a good conversation piece.

I'll be happy to take ones with the "non-industry standard trim". It won't look like anything else in my kit (or yours!). Quick to identify, easy to see, obviously mine.

It looks like an excellent and needed product. Nice work Sarah.

Hi Roberto,

You know the old saying ... you can never please everyone ...

As for the cold weather suggestion. Not a bad idea. Many is the time I worked on shoots back in NZ , down south in winter and helped out the Camera Dept with battery warmers.
I guess the issue for this product would be sacrificing the external pocket for cables etc on the back of the Brick Pouch to accommodate a zip to allow access to the pins and V mount to interface with the mount.
Did I not see on a thread somewhere that someone is doing neoprene cold weather covers ?
Anyway I will have a ponder about it at a later stage.

Thanks for the idea.

Sarah

Could the pockets for the cables be switched to the other side?

I didn't see that thread. If you don't mind I'd love to see a link if you have one, unless "a later stage" isn't later than next winter. :)

Hi Roberto,

Shifting the cable pocket to the front would impact on the size due to the presence of the flap.
It would also compromise the look somewhat, which of course is a moot point here.

The thread was for camera and accessory cold weather wraps. I think they are being field tested now.

As for "later", well when and if interest picks up further in the Molly-B products I will be looking at the range of suggestions that have been made so far in relation to the pouches.
Theoretically that would be sooner rather than later as I am not sitting on big numbers of stock.

Just received our package from Indonesia and we are very pleased with the contents. We do so much work on the beach down here in Miami and we are always breaking down the camera and hand carrying in soft bags. Many places will not let us use motorized vehicles due to turtle nesting sites and the added protection to the gear is just what I wanted. The added bonus is that when the small prop planes that we take to the Bahamas will not let us carry on our KATA 207 backpacks we have an alternative. It may seem overkill to some but if are looking for that extra layer of protection these bags are perfect. Oh and thanks for that little taste of Bali Sarah....we hung it on the edit suite wall.
warm Regards

Hey Sarah,
Any plans to make Rain Cover?

Sarah, fantastic stuff! I'm certainly okay with some extra flair with the designs.

I would like to pick up most of the kit at some point. Is that shipping option listed on the website the only option?

Thank you for bringing these to our attention!

For about six weeks now I've been testing out the camera bag, EVF sleeve, battery pouches, drive pouches, and the pouches for 5.6" LCD. Mine are all black - which I prefer.

The small Batik cloth patches don't bother me at all - I've worked in Indonesia before (Bali and Java) - and I really like Batik patterns - and its just a small amount of color on these black sleeves and pouches.

I've always been one to protect my investments in equipment by using it carefully on the set/in the field, and using lots of bags and pouches to protect it. I've found that my equipment usually takes about as good of care of me as I do of it :-)

Scratches and wear marks on equipment degrade its trade-in or re-sale value, so protective pouches make great sense to me in protecting my investments.

Sarah's products have done their job well in protecting my RED gear. As most here know, I do a lot of mobile production out in the wind, rain, heat, snow, sand, etc. - so protection is critical.

I have mostly used the camera bag to transport my back-up RED camera body when going on location. It has done well at that - it is lightweight and form fitting, plus the handle can stick out the bag to carry it with.

I do use the battery pouches regularly. Obviously they can prevent batteries from touching bare terminals, getting scratched up, etc. They are pretty much form fitting so they store on my backpacks and Pelican cases just about the same as the bare batteries did.

I really like the LCD pouch. I hate getting smudge marks and scratches on my LCD screens, and the pouch protects the LCD from that in my bags or cases. Before I got the LCD pouch I usually put the LCD in a Zip Lock baggie to protect it.

I also like the EVF sleeve. At $3k USD, and having sensitive optics and electronics inside, the EVF needs protection in transit and storage. Until I got the EVF sleeve I was using an old lens pouch to protect the EVF. I like the EVF sleeve much better for that. The sleeve could be a bit wider in diameter so that it is easier to get the EVF into it when the ET mount slide bar it attached to the EVF.

The drive pouches are fine - but I use the ET Shock Mounts on my RED drives, with ET Speedy Clamps, and I leave the Shock Mounts permanently attached to each of my drives. The RED drive, with the Shock Mount attached won't fit in the drive pouch Sarah makes.

All in all I've been way happy with all these pouches and sleeves. Again, I'm all about protecting my equipment - and these pouches and sleeves are a welcome addition to my RED camera kits.
